Need your expertise sirs and ma'ams..
Well, I finally saved enough money to buy a G752VY-RH71 (980m 4GB) but Microcenter caught my attention with this new Pascal notebook which is not even in the Asus website yet.
The G752VM-RB71 has a GTX1060 6GB GPU (not 1060m), Both are priced at $1699, have similar RAM, CPU, HDD, but the G752VY-RH71 has a 128gb SSD.
My question is, Is the 1060 in the same league as the 980m? I can't seem to find any benchmarks between the two.
These Pascal notebooks are getting sold out faster than I can research about them, so I need help quick.
The ROG 1070 laptops are out of my budget so I guess the main question is, Is the 1060 enough or at par with the 980m when it comes to handling the 1080 screen resolution of the G752?

Hands down the 1060 is better than the 980m u can always change {clone} the SSD later to a larger one as some have done , id get the G752 with 1060 no question about it

Wow, and it's VR ready too. I'm glad I waited. Yeah I'm planning to add a Samsung 850 EVO M2 1TB. Thanks for the quick reply.

Why would you go with an 850 EVO when you can put a 950 pro in there that is 5x faster?

Price. haha
I'm actually satisfied with the startup time of my stock 1tb 7200 hdd on my G751JT (35seconds without passwords & antivirus, 60-70seconds with PW & AVG). As far as file transfers and game load times, I'm a patient man.
But I need the 2 slots (main and optical drive) for my two 2tb hdds which I'm using for storage and personal files, (I travel a lot so external hdds are a hassle)and the G752VM uses one of them for the OS, so I'm forced to use an M2, and the 850 EVO M2 1tb gives me the best value for my money in terms of speed and storage.

The M2 850 EVO will not work in this machine. The 850 EVO is a SATA interface and the G752 is NVMe.
The only choices you have for M2 drives in the G752 is the 950 pro consumer version or the SM951 NVMe drive that is OEM.
Samsung software will not work with the OEM version, only on the 950 pro. They also do not support the SM951 as its OEM only so you have to go back to the vendor for warranty issues.

Oh no..
Thank you so much for that info, you saved me from a lot of headaches. $350 is a lot though for just 512gb storage of 950 pro m2 nvme.
I'll need more than that for my games. And the upcoming 1tb will most likely be over my budget.
I guess I'll just keep the 1tb hdd in there and use the optical drive bay for one of my 2tb hdd storage and use the other as an external hdd.
I'll just wait for m2 nvme prices to drop before getting one.

Found a nice website to compare GPU, CPU, SSD, etc

I kind of wish I'd of waited, I just bought a G752VY a little over a month ago. But I guess I still got an ok deal considering our got it for $1300, little over $400 less than the new 1060 model. Had considered trying to return mine for a 1060 model but 1. Not sure if i want to spend the extra $ and 2. I don't think they will take it back as I'm right outside a month.

I don't even...lol

I boot in under 6 seconds and I feel like that is a long time. 70 seconds, holy crap. I'd feel like I was stuck in 2002.

$1300 is a very good price for a G752VY. That's just a G752VT where I live. The basic G752VY still sells at $1699 here. If you can still replace it with the 1060 version, do it. These VR ready laptops are future proof for the next gen games. If not, the 980m is still future proof just not VR-ready. Just save up again for a year or so, maybe for the rumored G753? With new chasis, CPU, ang cheaper 10 series GPU.

Hahaha IKR
But I've been building my own PC even earlier than 2002 to know that they take much longer than 70 seconds to boot back then. And given the choice between a similarly priced SSD (128gb storage, 6-15 seconds startup) and HDD (1tb storage, 35-70 seconds startup) I'd still pick the HDD. I'd trade that 1 minute wait time for 8x more storage space. I'm just patient I guess, and poor. LOL

So are there any other ways to clone the Os and stuff to a drive if you go with the SM951? I just purchased a g752 with no ssd and am looking to add one.

If I understood JustinThyme correctly, you cannot clone using the Samsung software if you choose the m2 SM951, you might need to clean install? The m2 950PRO however, has the Samsung software which allows you to clone the existing drive. There are several posts that details step by step instructions.
