I can't see how any Z170 board would be worth updating to Z270 if there is an expectation if improved performance or useful features.

There are however reasons to update:

1) You enjoy taking apart a system and rebuilding with newer components.
2) You like the look of a particular new board.
3) You think a 32GB Intel Optane drive might the answer to your prayers.
4) You have or want two M.2 drives and want to put them in a R0 for benchmarking (though unrealistic) excitement.

For the record, I am saddened that no one enjoyed the humor of my 2nd post.

What the hell ASUS?! Where is the Maximus IX Impact?

Some might wonder just why anyone with an VIII Impact, would bother with an IX. No M.2, all we got was that useless Intel intermediary storage adapter thing and that's it; no one else, except for intel, supported that adapter in a plug and play-type product. I think, in fact, I know that ASUS need to give us an IX Impact and not repeat that mistake.

Another thing. Why is it that, when Impact is concerned, it gets the shaft as far as priority goes? Why not treat it like the ROG product that it is and have it shining bright alongside the Extreme, the Hero, and all the other 'Justice League' members at CES?

I am, mysharona, and I do own a Maximus VIII Impact and it's a fantastic little machine. I want a IX, please.

Yes! A modest, thoughtful, and measured reaction that perfectly condenses a complex set of feelings into a simple physical action. I consider this a success.

Well, I bought the Maximus VIII Extreme late in its lifespan in October 2016 and I have just moments ago purchased the Maximus IX Formula and the i7 7700k which will arrive tomorrow.

There are however, the reasons I updated :)

1) Because I am stupid.
2) Because I am stupid.
3) Because I am stupid.
4) Because I am stupid.

But despite that, I got it mainly because the new board will look great all lit up in my Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ATX Glass case.

Hi upsnef what brand and model touchscreen did you use in the build? Can it be setup as an extension of the desktop or is it just a standalone monitor with a Pi board controlling the output. I want to add a touchscreen or a non touchscreen to my build to be used as a extension monitor to show temperature of my system in real time any suggestions? * Thanks......Bitman

this monitor is perfect for your need , I used it exactly for same thing ;)

with 3d there is a possibility to create a backplate for the apex or put the backplate of the formula on the apex?

I found on page 4 on edgeup of Raja's z270 motherboard guide that the price will be $289

http://edgeup.asus.com/2017/01/03/z270-motherboard-guide/4/

I'm really hoping it get released tomorrow. Its the last piece of a new build I'm working on.

Ok thanks for the info Raja and for the extreme what's the release date?Another thing with 3d there is a possibility to create a backplate for the apex or put the backplate of the formula on the apex?
The monoblock of the extreme can fit in the apex?

Menthol

Just my guess but if you want a backplate why not purchase a board that comes with one already.
Mono blocks are designed to fit one board only as they are a custom block after all

So you say that is better formula for the backplate or apex/extreme but apex is so sexy ^^ but i have see that the apex don't have the wifi so i can put a killer or an pcie intel in the mobo?
But if i want create a custom loop with to pump with the apex is possible?

Of course, it is possible. But, I would say, if you need to ask, you're better off having someone do the work for you.

Hey Raja, while you're here, you haven't seen any interference with the DIMM.2 riser board on the Apex and a Noctua NH-D15 CPU cooler? Or any other issues when using the D15 on the Apex?

Raja@ASUS
01-15-2017, 07:48 PM
I use water cooling, so not the right person to ask. If that cooler isnt limited to a single orientation, though, it should fit even if it is oversized in the other direction, no?

lufiron
01-15-2017, 07:59 PM
Yeah that's kind of what I'm asking. You can mount the front fan on the back side of the cooler if need be, or move it up the fins, or just completely change the orientation of the cooler itself. I was just wondering if you heard/seen anything that needed to be done first hand is all.

Raja@ASUS
01-15-2017, 08:00 PM
No, its not something I'd even think about knowing you're not limited to changing the orientation of the cooler.

You have to keep in mind these boards just hit the market and the apex isn't even available for sale anywhere yet. Only thos that come with WC from the factory which at this point is the Formula with the cross chill and the Extreme that also is not yet available. Give it a few months and Im sure EK and Bitspower will have block available.

the Apex and a Noctua NH-D15 CPU cooler

Quick update here. The Noctua NH-D15 will block the first PCI-E slot on the board (in any orientation). You need to use the offset NH-D15S to prevent blocking PCI-E slot 1.

Care to post a pic of it blocking the first PCIe slot? Would be interesting to see, given one has seen the D15 (not s) used without blocking the slot. ;)

I can see why Noctua is saying no. The clearance here is really tight, and it looks like the videocard is being pushed away from the cooler, as the second screw hole for it to be secured at the slot side doesn't line up with the hole on the case. Cards with bigger backplates might have an issue.

Arne Saknussemm
01-29-2017, 06:39 PM
Maybe Noctua playing it safe...some cards with naked PCB... components might be close to fan fixings...but it's obvious from the pic it's possible...GPU doesn't look displaced to me
