I am thinking of getting sound card or dac/amp combo with my dt 990 250ohm. Is it necessary to have a external dac? Thanks

Before I installed the sortware it was okay but flat. Sadly when I installed the software it kept crashing when I tried it on my new build last week so couldn't really tell.
I was hoping to replace my SB Z but not yet it seems.

I am using a USB Soundcard since HERO VI and it's microphone issues. ( https://us.creative.com/p/sound-blaster/sound-blaster-omni-surround-5-1 )
When I bought the HERO X, I didn't even thought of leaving the integrated one enabled.
I would say it is a trend with HERO and the integrated sound.

It isn't being ignored. The imbalance issue has been passed on to realtek. Can't post an update til we have one.

Just for testing, I enabled the onboard audio and disabled my external USB one.
Daaaaamn. Asus really messed up with the audio on this one.
Was just watching a documentary named Shenzhen: The Silicon Valley of Hardware where they praise the fast development and production times on hardware in Shenzhen.
Testing and debugging time is a big NoNo in order to achieve the above mentioned time frames, me thinks. And it shows.

I am using the latest Realtek driver .8366 from the website and not the Asus website and I haven't had any of those issues. Not sure why though. I was reading about Sonic Studio that supposedly gets installed with the Audio driver. I don't have Sonic Studio on my computer. Actually don't think I ever had it from day one on this new build.

Always good to rely on generic drivers and sotware. Standard Realtek 8365 works here nicely. So the suggested 8366 surely also.
I hope higher grade Asus boards as mine don't need additional parts in the code to activate headphone amps and such.
I lately switched to Asus happily awaiting its software but even the Bios Qfan control only looks good but works limited. I use a vintage version of Speedfan now to control my fans.
AI suite is colorful but the services and install with the latest version made me stop using Asus software completely. Support seems to end quickly on older boards also.

thanks for input . i will uninstal the latest ones from the asus x hero mainboard website and try those and report back if the front panel audio is crackling and un balanced sound by 30 % in one side .

i ruled out its not my front panel on my case issue or a front panel cord issue last 2 mobos didnt do it . will report back im hoping we still have a amplfy and eq settings in the generic non moded realtec drivers but thats icing on the cake lol

*update * the lastest drivers for asus x hero on the asus web page give front panel audio crackling and unblanced sound
when using the rear panel audio there is no crackling . just unblanced sound by 10 %

i tried uninstaling and instaling normal realtec drivers and same thing front panel crackling i tried some old ones and the ones u mentioned in your post same thing turn your sound down to 20 % play a song u will hear crackling .. .rear panel does not .

its not the case or my cases front panel as i have used 3 diffrent boards and doesnt do it .
hope this gets fixed soon

No distortion here at 20% driving 120Ohm headphones at the frontpanel. It is fed directly from tne S1220 Realtek codec.
Your board seems to use a dedicated combination of a ES9023P DAC with RC4580 OP amps at the frontpanel. It really may be a defect of one of these parts.

Just out of curiosity, are you all using the Hero X WiFi version? I keep reading about issues with audio, VRM sensors etc and the common link I seem to see is the WiFi board. I have a non-WiFi Hero X and I have VRM temps in HWinfo and my audio is fantastic really for onboard, especially since I was using a Xonar DX on my M8R before I upgraded to Z370. However I do notice the imbalance which Raja said was a driver issue, but it's better than having my Xonar occasionally just not produce sound from the left channel.

I haven't tried front panel audio yet but I will when I am at home next and report back.

if you have vrm then you are lucky, not every Hero has vrm temps. My non wifi version doesn't .
yeah I do notice imbalance, but no hiss, crackling, etc.

Any fixes yet? I was gonna buy it but I am scared to now, my main reason for buying was because of the audio. I want something very good for audio but this thread is stating it has a lot of issues?

I have a wifi model and I don't appear to be able to monitor VRM temp in HWinfo or AIDA64 either. Sorry I know this isn't related to audio but I thought it was worth mentioning. I don't appear to have any audio issue on my X hero though.

I have disabled the Hero X sound system and have installed SBZ. Sounds much better. However, to be fair, I discovered that the problems I was having with recording was due to a software conflict (caused by something I still don't understand) that could only be fixed by starting with a clean Administrator login. I was able to transfer 99% of everything over to this new login, so I only wasted all of the time it took to communicate with ASUS and SB techs and the time I took to try and troubleshoot myself. In the end it was an unsolvable problem that no one could understand. At least I didn't have to reinstall the OS. For those that want to know exactly what I did; I created a new Administrator login, copied all of the user files (Documents, Video, AppData, etc.) and created a folder on my new desktop that contained it all. I coped all of it while in the new User account so I would have any conflicts. Then, I logged into the old again and copied the files from the new folder into their new locations in the new user locations. Once I had everything copied (have to be very careful to get everything) I logged into the new account, checked to make sure everything worked (and I could finally record again) before deleting the old account.
