Huh. I guess somewhere along the way something happened to my ME Interface. I installed it. But I reinstalled it and that did the trick. Had no problem installing the ME Update after I reinstalled MEI.
Of course, because the version number is not newer, it won't install over the previously installed version - but at least it's fixed for anyone who hasn't installed it yet...
