Asus dark hero startup issue ?
    Hi all
I have a Asus Crosshair VIII DarkHhero ...with an AMD 5900X , 32gb of Gskils ram

Had a few times over last few months since recieving board where the system wont power on.
You press power switch on case and nothing .
You press power button on motherboard ...nothing ....and its lit up white ...all rgb is working ( on when powered off )
If i turn off PSU and back then power it back on ...system boots fine.
It can then be fine for say 4 weeks ...then happen out the blue again.
Was ok with old motherboard....so only things that have changed is MB and CPU.

Tried reflashing bios back to earlier version ...no different.
Had new graphics card since last time so rules that out.
Tried taking ram sticks out ...no difference.

Seems starnge how can run for weeks without issue ( but dont use it every day )

Im using an EVGA supernova 850W PSU.

Not major issue as all have to do is power off PSU and all good again ...but got to be something wrong.
Asus say sounds like something tripping PSU protection ...will have to try unpluging 24 pin and 8 pin cables next time , then plug back in to see if motherboard or psu .

    Any help most appreciated.

    Doco
When the motherboard doesn't turn on does any code show up on the leds on the top of the board that might help narrow down what the issue may be?

Turning off the PSU or needing to unplugging suggests you have a dead short problem, and it is clearly quite random. I would be looking for something like a power cord shorting in the system, doubt standoff screw.

You didn't meantion cooling solution for the CPU. I would have a look here as well.

    Dodgy switch in case.
    Dodgy USB connector.
    Dodgy HDMI cable.
Check you have all power cables fully seated on the motherboard / clipped. Inclusive the two EATX above cpu, top left of motherboard.

Really hard to nail anything as random as 4 weeks ok then fault but the above is some of the areas I would start looking.

    Hi
There is no post codes coming up or lights underneath it ...just basically when press case switch or start button on motherboard ..it does nothing .
As for cooler ...im using a Asus Ryujin 360 AIO
    Yes strange how its intermittent.
Once working have no issues what so ever...can turn off and on all night ..no issues .
I was going to try unplugging the extra 4 pin power connector at top of MB ...as heard its not really needed....worth a try as did not have that on my other board.
Ill will check all power connections over weekend ...and maybe try upluging some usb headers ...but most of them are needed for ICUE fans etc ...but they never had issues with old setup .
Only thing added on this board is a usb 3 header as case has usb 3 front ports ( lian li ) ...and old asus z170 deluxe MB didnt have that.
    Might unplug that .

    Many thanks

Don't what you read isnt always true, it is needed. DOCP problems have been resolved directly by plugging both in and fair few other issues. BOTH is best and 100% certain this is not source issue for you.

Just does not start up... case switch could be sus, try onboard on/off and see if this works. However if you must turn off power supply this normally indicates a dead short condition or even over-voltage / something is tripping PSU protection mechanism.

so would it be worth turning off power to usb ports when pc is shut down via bios ? thats if possible.... to elliminate usb ports ?
    Thanks

ok ... so been thinking if had anything new after having new MB and CPU.
All i can think of is i had a new Corsair K100 keyboard with nexus addon screen and
new corsair wireless mouse about 3 weeks after getting MB up and running.
Could the usb keyboard cause this issue ? or anything connected via usb may cause this ?

Also if the PSU is in protection mode , would there be any power to MB ...as the RGB lights are still working ( have them set to on when MB is powered down )
and also start button is lit up.

I have been into bios and set usb power to off when in S5 state ...which guessing is powered down.

    Many thanks for the help

    right ..another update.
    So been trying pc and all seems fine ...so turned off pc and thought would power up straight away ....which it did ...but after 2 seconds i decided i wanted to power off again so held power button down ( pc hadnt even got to bios splash screen}
PC would not do anything again.

So tried disconning usb hub connectors , no change , tried 8 pin at top of board and red light came on next to it ...so plugged it back in ....tried 4 pin next to it ....still nothing when pressing power button on MB ( its lit up white and rgb logo still working )
Tried disconning HDMI cable , usb cables for keyboard etc ...nothing .
Tried removing power button from case to motherboard ...still nothing.
    Removed usb 3 header ...nothing.

Only one forgot to try was usb 3.2 header ...think thats what it is.

In the end i removed the 24 pin cable and reconnected ...press star button and away it went.

Tried to replicate the issue by holding power button ...but wont happen now.

Can ram overclock cause this ? as now put back to standard ...or auto.

So basically i pulled the 24 pin to get working instead of turning psu off ....if psu protection ...would pulling 24 pin clear issue or would you still have to power psu off ??

    many thanks

    another update lol
managed to replicate issue ....seems if leave pc on for a bit i can get it to do it.
turn pc off ...started up then held power switch on case ..usually it will just restart pc ...but when happens pc will shut down and nothing will happen when you press button.
so tried usb 3.2 or whatever it is lol ...still noting .
so though , reset bios ....held in bios reset button for 10 seconds ...and guess what ...the sytem then powered up when pressed button.
So thought would try again ...straight way ...and got it to do it after 3 attemps ...pressed bios button reset and worked again .
Now ...as it had reset bios ...no overclocks were set ...so guessing second time after bios reset was noting to do with ram overclock.
Could it be ram issue ? worth taking out one stick ? running 2 16gb sticks of Gskill trident z

update again ...got it to do it again ..so took out 1 stick of ram ...though had cured it ..but no ..so took out both and kept starting and powering off straight away ...nothing ..no issue and tried it 20 times.
so put both sticks back in ..and nothing for another 20 times ..but does motherboard have to recognise ram ( needs more time than 3 secs ?
so wondering if does it again now ...could it be down to ram ?

saga continues lol ...just tried it again ...happened ...so took out all ram ...reset bios and it started again ..so tried few times holding power button ..and it happened again with no ram ...inserted ram and reset bios ..wouldnt happen again after 15 tries ...but guessing now pc has booted up properly ...the issue will continue .

Now is this still ram or something else ...as happened with no ram after bios reset...but pc hadnt got chance to recognise ram...dunno
would faulty psu cause any of this ? weird !!!

hi ...yes very strange indeed .

Now im guessing its not PSU issue as soon as i reset bios it powers up via power button.
Asus themselves have replied to an email i sent them last night ,say sounds like power supply and try another ..but were still unsure lol ...but doesnt sound like it to me.

Im getting ram changed anyway ( refunded ) ....as the Gskills ones i have are not on the compatibility list ...but the Corsair ones i have ordered are.
Gskill Trident Z F4-3600C17D are old ones.
So will try and elliminate that .

    Just seems very strange.

Is resetting bios clearing any fault in PSU ...like pulling 24 pin ...if so could it then be psu ? Don't want to spend £200 on another psu if just a guess lol

Does not sound like PSU issue. These are fairly definite when there is a problem.

See what new RAM is like.

    hi
well have had new ram ...but also have gone and upgraded PSU to an Asus ROG Strix 1000 watt .
I have a buyer for old one anyway so may aswell bite the bullet and change both...( wont know which fixed issue if issue is fixed lol )
At moment ..had no issues ..and also can run ram at full 3600mhz without any crashing ...so bonus ...maybe ram was issue but time will tell.

    karlosfandango
right ...issue persists after new ram , new PSU and cables.....£250 lighter !!!!
Been working fine since saturday , but came home today , been using it ...then had my tea and would not power up again till i switched off psu .

So basically everything has been changed except CPU and motherboard.
Can a cpu cause this...im guessing it would atleast do something when i pressed the button. ...or can windows itself cause this which cannot see myself.
Once running it has no issues what so ever....no post codes etc.

Ow i also tried turning off power to usb ports when powered down ...in bios ...and still happened.

Im steering more towards faulty motherboard .

    Any help most appreciated

    Hi
Could you share how did you overclock ram frequency? If you do bios reset to recovery pc back , sometimes issues caused by firmware of ram.

I have the same problem with the same motherboard - Dark Hero. Randomly (?) PC doesn't start until I turn off the PSU for some time.

@Karlos: Try this: disable the fast boot/startup in Windows 10. I don't know if it will help, because the problem is too random (?) for me, but as I'm using dual boot with Linux as a second system I'm wondering if the problem is related only to Windows (only if I turn off the system in Windows) - I don't know, but it's something I think about. I disabled the fast boot and now I'm waiting for the problem to repeat itself.

Second thing you can try if desperate: you can check if the problem appears when using another system, like Linux. I'm monitoring this trying to narrow down the problem, but I have no certain conclusions.

What is certain for me is this: ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero motherboard has a problem related to the system boot - the system doesn't start randomly (?) using this motherboard.

Also chiming in on this problem - I bought a Dark Hero mainboard (paired with a 5900X) in february in Germany and I am having the very same issue since then: Randomly, after a couple of cold restarts the board will not boot until the PSU is disconnected for about 10-20 seconds (probably until some capacitor is discharged).
There is no POST code, no fans spin up, nothing - the on/off switch on the mainboard is lit, but if pressed, nothing happens (same with the external power switch).

I literally replaced or temporarily removed every other component in the PC to check, wheter this is caused by any other source (CPU/RAM/PSU/NIC/6800XT<->2080Ti GPU/sound card/SSDs), but the problem persists - this leaves only the mainboard as source of the problem.
It makes no difference, if I run RAM in XMP mode (FlareX 3200 1.35V) or with standard JDEC timings, the problem also occurs with stock/default BIOS settings.
The system runs completely fine and rock stable otherwise, I can run Prime95 or other stress tests for days/weeks without any hiccups.

After these tests I finally replaced the mainboard with a B550-E Gaming and guess what? The problem vanished.
I also recently tested a Gigabyte X570S Aorus Master to check, whether this is connected to the X570(S) chipset, but the problem is only reproducible with the Dark Hero.

I'd really like to switch back to the Dark Hero once this issue is resolved or a workaround is found, because I'm completely happy with it otherwise.
I am running an extra 10G NIC, which depends on a 4xPCIe slot to unlock its full potential (with only one PCIe lane it is limited to around 800MB/s half duplex). The B550-E Gaming only offers 1/2xPCIe when another PCIe (1x) card (extra sound card) is present, while the Dark Hero always offers 4xPCIe in the lowest PCIe slot, so this is another motivation for me to switch back to the Dark Hero.

I am running dual boot (Win10/Linux, like HDuran), perhaps this has something to do with the problem, however disabling fast boot did not fix it in my tests.

    Same issue
    Hello friends,

I have the same issue. Randomly my system does not start. And i have no clue what the cause might be and how to reproduce the behavior. It seems that quiet a few people have this problem. I hope someone will find a solution because I cannot. Asus might be able to fix that with a BIOS Update.

Anyway, if someone else has a solution or an idea. Please let me know. Thanks

May I have the bios version?
Did you change any settings in bios?

It means absolutely nothing happens when i press the on switch (either in MB or Case). So there is no boot, no error code, nothing.
    Bios Version is 3801.
Sure I made some changes. Loading DOCP Profile and some TPM Stuff.

    Hi playforpleasure,

Does it boot successfully after clear cmos to restore bios settings?
How often did it occur?(for example: if you start three times a day, once of them is not boot? ) only occurred while cold restart?
Did it occur after any update or components changed?
May I have the information below?
    - the serial number of your motherboard and graphics card via PM
    - Please check the specific model name of RAM such as F4-3600C16D-16GTZNC.
    - Please press ctrl+F2 in bios utility to save the bios settings to USB flash drive and share the setting file to me.

Just want to say I have the exact same issue after upgrading to this motherboard togehter witn CPU (5900x) and RAM (2xM391A4G43AB1-CWE) - from ASUS ROG STRIX X570-E, 3700x, RAM: CMK32GX4M2B3200C16 - the issue still happens after upgrading gpu from 580 xt to 6700 xt

FYI - a story about an identical issue can be found here.

He ended up replacing the board - and that fixed the issue - he also did an RMA on the old board - resulting in him getting a new one.

Do you mean if the power kept on, the system was no boot and the q-led was on sometimes, and you need to turn off PSU and turn on again?

Have you restored bios to all default settings but it still occurred?

This occurs about every other time I try to power on my system.

Yes I'm running 3801 bios - it happened with the original bios (no idea what version that was) as well.
    bios is all default

I will be doing some tests today to see if I can find a precise way to reproduce it.

Did a cmos reset (to make sure everything was on default)
Powered on my pc - and turned it off
left it off for 8 min - didnt't turn on when hitting the power button

I have had the same problem for months! Glad I found this and am not the only one. I have to power off my Seasonic 850w titanium psu and reseat the power plug in order to power on the computer. Seems to trigger every other day or sometimes every day. :(

I can already tell you that it will not help. ASUS has no idea what's wrong with this motherboard - it's "change this", "change that", PSU, ram, etc. etc. - nothing helps if you read about other people struggles - apart from changing the motherboard to something else of course.

I agree with you, as I have seen people having this issue without ram installed - I just happened to have qualifying ram lying around - so now we can rule "bad" ram out :)
