Hi all,
Our tech team have found the solution for this.
The issue is probabilistic and not everyone has the issue.
We are dealing with the issue, but it would take some time to arrange repair
Sorry for any inconvenience caused. -

I also received DM to potentially have a replacement board, but there are 2 issues I have with this:
1) The start-up problem according to ASUS is probabilistic, so there is a chance that even a new replacement board has the same issue. Imagine going thru the huge effort of dismantling a build up PC and rebuilding it just to find out the new board has exactly the same problem!
2) Asus did not state if we would get a new or a refurbished board, imagine getting a "repaired", scratched/bend motherboard to replace your pristine board. This happens a lot with replacement boards, since they are the ones that are send back due to issues and then get patched up and send out as replacements.
Both of these scenarios put me off from considering a replacement unless ASUS states these boards are new and confirmed to not have this issue.
But I bet they wouldnt actually test them to see if this issue is present. -

02-28-2022, 04:29 PMlinaraasus any commitment to new replacements boards arriving before sending broken 1 back?
a reminder, that asus could already commit to replacing all boards, that have this issue with brand new boards and that said boards will arrive, before the replacement needs to get shipped.
this would at least give people here some piece of mind.
so how about asus commits to that already? while they are supposedly working on the replacement program in the back for another 30 days or so.
but hey it has only been 7 MONTHS! since asus knows about this issue, so another month to set something up, that they already be able to execute right from the start within a week or so just makes perfect sense. ;) -

If the issue is probabilistic and it is a hw issue, it means given enough time, everybody will experience it so I want my money back, I didn't pay 450e for a MB only to wait for it to break.
Release the statement and I am returning it that very day.
I have already experienced it like 20 times already and now I know why there haven't been more start up failures because I regularly turn off my PSU when leaving the home for a longer period of time, so basically everyday except a few days in a year. Today I browsed reviews of the mobo from the shop I had purchased it from and there are several people complaining about it so the issue is pretty prevalent.
GG Asus. -

Just received this reply from Asus. I'll never buy another product they make ever again.
==============
Hi mbarry,
After checked with our team, the waiting time for the motherboard would be longer than 45days in US and the replacement would be refurbished one.
Please consult the retailer to see if you can get a refund from the retailer.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Yep same here, got a reply from Asus saying the replacement board would be a refurbished board....
This is terrible and unacceptable.
Definitely my last Asus product :) -

Wow. This sucks. I guess its time to start reading up on other manufacturers. This is really depressing because:
Gigabyte has been called out for selling power supplies that burst into flames and factory water cooled GPU's that have an aluminum block under very thin plating that is corroding horribly within weeks.
MSI it just a scummy company that has been caught scalping their RTX3000 series GPU's through front companies. Then there is Mystic Light...
AsRock - Is a lower end spin off of Asus. I don't know much about them and guess I need to look closely at their current products.
EVGA - Maybe this is the best option. They usually are late with their mobo releases, and only offer 1 model, but its usually a really good board. And they have good customer service. I have an EVGA X59 board that is still running.
Asus has been my go to for motherboads for years. It is sad to see them fail with the X570 Hero series boards and the Z690 boards. I get it that motherboards are complex products, and they have to chrun them out quickly. It is not unreasonable that sometimes there will be issues that get out. If/when that happens, its all about what the company does about it. When EVGA RTX3090's were failing, they replaced them with brand new product - immediately. Sending people who bought a brand new top tier board a refurb, after stalling for 7 months, and taking over 45 days to do it it totally unacceptable. This issue needs to get to Gamer's Nexys and similar platforms, to shine a light on how Asus is trying to squirm out of this. -

Got this message too:
he replacement plan and process is still under discussion.
However, for the new replacement request, after checked with our team, it would be refurbished one.
If it doesn't meet your expectation, please consult the retailer to see if you can get a refund from the retailer.
If you are willing to accept the refurbished motherboard, please let me know.
Thank you.
I replied this:
Honestly, I find this fact unacceptable. My motherboard looks like new. I've sent a motherboard for repair before and got it back in worse condition than when I sent it in. If you can't be 100 percent sure that the error won't appear again, I don't want to take that risk. I think it's really a shame that ASUS doesn't approach the customers of their high-end products and offer new replacement mainboards, because we're not talking about a 100-150 Euro budget mainboard here, but about a 450 Euro board.
Edit: My dealer has replied. He replied that he would also send the mainboard to Asus for repairs because I have been using my mainboard for a few months now. -

I think I must chime in here even though I have a different board, a tuf gaming b560m plus wifi. It had all the problems discussed here, and whatever I did wouldn't help to make it start up normally after a shutdown. Yesterday I decided to try Ubuntu. I downloaded the ISO and put it on a usb key. I didn't install it because I was checking to see if WIndows was the culprit.
Windows was.
Now I have a working motherboard. I can suspend Ubuntu, shut it down and go to sleep with the merry thought that Ubuntu will start normally.
Give any linux flavours you like a try. I don't play games, but if you do you can run Windows on QEMU without any performance hits. I am running Ubuntu 21.10 if you're curious.
@ASUS. It's not only WIndows' fault, but It's also yours. You didn't do quality tests properly. And you lost me more than a month to sort this out. -

EVGA would be worth looking at. I had problems before with Water Cooled factory o/c 980ti but the are good with warranty and never had motherboard die or PSU made by them have an issue. Also have two cases made by them, build quality over time faired well, could have been better.
AsRock are not great. Had motherboards die AM4.
MSI are strong in AM4 platform and like the BIOS a lot.
GB are ok in AM4 platform, dislike dual bios feature (horrible) and bios menu in general but it is what it is.
Asus are my second choice to EVGA and have fair few ASUS products. However at the time EVGA had no AM4 products or would have considered them. -

Sorry to hear that. You know I was reading this thread the other day and I did read a post that says that installing linux doesn't work, which was why I didn't tried Ubuntu. I replaced my PSU; I tried ERP in the BIOS; I tested my RAM modules one by one and nothing worked. I contacted ASUS, they told me my RAM wasn't on their QVL and that I should buy new RAM. What the h* were they thinking? I didn't OC my RAM. Everything is at default. As a last resort, 2 days ago I tried Ubuntu and it worked.
I have a Gigabyte and a Colorful board lying around, which don't have this problem. Anyway, I won't buy any ASUS products ever. They're bad, bad. -
03-03-2022, 11:55 AMlinarashort collection of the current state and knowledge we have
i thought i put together a short collection of what we know to be true, or are almost certain to be true and what we don't know yet:
1 the problem is a hardware problem with the motherboard and not a software problem
2 the start up issue is not limited to a certain set of dark hero motherboards, but is extremely widespread (see people receiving replacement motherboards, that
have the issue again)
3 the problem effects more motherboards than just the dark hero.
4 asus knew about this problem for at least 7 months (not including posts/reports about other motherboards, that may have been posted before this thread)
5 asus put almost no resources behind finding the cause of this problem. we know this by the insane time frame and the refusal of asus to loan entire systems from effected people, instead of just trying to get their mobo for testing, after they couldn't reproduce the issue with just the motherboard.
6 asus claims, that setting up a replacement program for effected people will take over 45 days!
7 asus says, that all replacement boards in the program will be garbage refurbs, instead of new motherboards.
8 asus did never answer, whether manufacturing of the dark hero or other effected motherboards will get fixed, so that no new motherboard will have the start up issue. i specifically asked asus about this and i did NOT receive an answer. so we MUST assume, that they keep the manufacturing lines running with broken hardware and hoping, that most won't blame the motherboard or ignore the issue or won't see the issue, due to their system specs.
9 we don't know the exact nature of the issue yet, because asus deliberately refuses to give out details about this issue. this also includes the possibility, that the start-up issue could turn into a completely bricked motherboard down the line. we simply can't know this, because asus refuses to give out any actual details about what the hardware issue, that is causing the start-up issue.
10 due to vague wording "possible fix", we can not be sure, whether the "fix", that asus is secretive talking about actually permanently and properly fixes the problem.
11 we do not know whether the replacement program, that will send out garbage refurbs will send the refurb garbage out before we would need to send out our motherboards, or if we have to send in our broken motherboards first, then wait weeks or months for the refurb to arrive with a non working system in the meantime.
12 we do not know whether the eventual replacement program will be limited to the warranty period of the motherboard. (3 years dark hero i believe) for those not getting why this matters: a used dark hero could not have shown the start up issue on the seller's setup, but will show the start up issue in the used buyer system potentially.
13 we do not know whether asus will fix the broken hardware in their future non dark hero motherboards like AM5, etc... , which means, that any future asus motherboard might also come with this issue.
14 we do not know whether asus will DARE to charge the customer for shipping one way or both ways for the replacement program, or if they will pay all shipping.
15 we do not know whether the eventual replacement program will be region locked or completely worldwide.
so there you have it. feel free to correct something, if i have it wrong.
of course asus could easily actually commit to a brand new problem free motherboard for everyone effected, or commit to other parts, that are up in the air rightnow in this 15 point list, but they probably don't, because asus is very anti consumer/criminal even i guess at this point as everyone here clearly understands now. -

03-09-2022, 08:28 AMitzdevilsownSame issues on my Strix B550 Gaming XE
I've built two systems (one for myself, and one for my best friend) using two Strix B550 Gaming XE mainboards.
Both of them have these issues, before i've used two ASRock B550 Taichi Mainboards with the same components without any problems. Pretty disappointed by ASUS at this point. -

My dark hero board has this exact issue which will lock up require power cycling the PSU to restart my PC. I paid for shipping and sent in my board to Asus for repair about 2 weeks ago and just got it back this afternoon. The repair detail shows - "Can not duplicate customer's reported issue, however Bios/Firmware/Software were updated for optimal performance"
I think I am out for ~$500 for this board ($450 for the board + repair shipping) and wasted my time researching this issue and going through the RMA process. I now have this board back that I also need to send to e-Waste for recycling. This really not an experience I expected buying from Asus. -

Bitwit just did a video on his Youtube channel about RGB software causing BSOD's and crashing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7YKtBFGZlQ
I haven't read through this entire thread, but I have this Patriot folder on my computer and do not remember installing it. I have AURA lighting effect addon instaalled as well.
Like I said, I haven't read through this entire thread so I don't know if this software has been discussed as a possible problem.
His entire video is really worth watching, I think. He did a great job.

Mike, this issue here is cause by a hardware defect due to Asus incompentence, it affects multiple boards and so far Asus has not told us exactly what mistake they made (putting components wrong way onto the board or what ever)
They did say they would replace affected boards, but only with ****ty refurb models. Embarrassing situation for Asus, hope this gets more and more media attention so that Asus looses sales, reputation and trust -
03-11-2022, 05:39 AMlinarawhat boards are definitely free from this issue?
ASUS, you KNOW what the faulty circuit is by now. this means you KNOW what boards are free from the issue.
tell us what boards are effected and whether asus is fixing production or not.
for example is the:
ASUS ROG Strix X570-E Gaming WIFI II guaranteed free from the start-up issue by using a different NOT affected circuit, or is it likely to also show the start-up issue?
also a reminder for ASUS: it is likely just a bit more time required, before real tech media takes on this deliberate negligence by asus and spitting on customers by asus. so maybe it would be wise to get ahead of this. but hey, let's just pull a PR nightmare i guess and massive confidence loss in all asus products, because that makes sense, right asus? -

Yeah, I had gotten the impression from following new posts on this thread that it was hardware related. I also posted the email exchange I had with an ASUS rep that ended up going nowhere.
I just thought that I would share that video in case someone would find some benefit to it.
I've got this thread bookmarked and check it daily. Hopefully one of the big Youtube channels will take this on and really put some heat on ASUS.
Appreciate your reply.

Looks like the interval for this issue has changed dramatically for me.
Haven't had it since a few weeks, until yesterday. Interval is getting longer. No idea why.
Magical self healing? =)
Anyway... I think the general hardware quality is getting worse and worse from year to year.
I am faced with more hardware faults than years ago, with new products.
Maybe it's just bad luck, but I have noticed an increased amount of faulty hardware also from others.
Specially from manufacturers. Sometimes they get faked (relabeled) parts or B quality. Of course it depends on the source.
And not every manufacturer can pay testing the parts using electrical tests, x-ray and chemical tests like the car industry does when they get parts from brokers.
I just wonder what happened to Asus.
What's the problem? What work has to be done?
Soldering a new connection?
Cut a connection on the PCB?
Replacing a BGA?
Asus, please let us know, detailed. I love soldering, also with a heat gun and I don't care if it's a 0201 package type SMD component or a BGA or what ever. -

I have the same problem with a Dark Hero MB, Been working fine for the last year, but a couple of weeks ago I started getting the no start from power button unless I completely discharge power. Start switch on MB is always white when this happens. System is used daily, turned on when I get home from work, turned off when I go to bed.
It doesn't happen every time, might get 4 days starts, 2 days doesn't.
System specs:
Dark Hero MB Bios 3801
Ryzen 5900x
Gskill F4-4000c16d032gtzna Trident Z Neo
EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 FTW3 ULTRA GAMING
EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 P2 Power Supply
I've had Asus boards for years, But having read how they are dealing with this and sending out refurbed boards as replacement for a premium priced MB, I doubt I will ever buy their products again. -

This is interesting, and concerning. I have a Dark Hero I bought from New Egg in January 2021. The part number indicates it was manufactured in China. I don't know if that makes any difference with this particular problem. I have never experienced this start up problem and thought maybe my board was not affected. The more posts I read about this, It seems that this issue is not limited to just the Dark Hero as there are reports of the regular X570 Hero doing this and also a few reports of other series of boards. Now I have to wonder if I dodged this bullet or if it just hasn't happened yet. Between this and the Z690 backwards capacitor fiasco, I am really losing confidence in Asus products. The choices are pretty limited and I am not impressed with Gigabyte, MSI, or Asrock.

Hi all,
If you have the startup issue when using the ROG CROSSHAIR VIII DARK HERO motherboard, please try with other PSU and describe the issue in details.
I'll contact you and arrange the repair for you via PM.
If you have the similar issue when using other motherboard model, please create a new thread for discussing.
Thank you so much. -

ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero
EVGA 850 PSU
RTX 3080
Having the exact same issue as the original post.
Sometimes when I press the power button nothing happens, power button on motherboard, nothing happens.
Turn off PSU for 10 seconds until power goes from board, switching back and then pressing the case button and motherboard boots.
Have just updated to bios 4006. Same intermittent problem. -

I have the same issue on a new Crosshair Hero Dark Hero VIII I installed recently. I would say I have to shut power supply of first to get it to boot from power button about 40% of the time.

i have just recently started having a very similar issue with my dark hero :|
After leaving the computer on for a while, let's say an hour?, not using it... i come back and my monitor is asleep. The keyboard lights will not respond, and pc will not wake. The PC itself is not asleep, i believe as it is set to never sleep or hibernate.
unlugged keyboard from switching hub and plugged into motherboard, in hopes of 'jogging' it awake. no change.
opened case and pressed START button on motherboard, no change. This should behave like a front panel power button press right?
Pressed reset button on motherboard, no change. This should force a reset, right?
held one or the other for 5-10 seconds, no change. not sure if this does anything?
front power button long press - no change. Windows is set to shut down computer with power button press.
only thing that shuts down the PC is killing the PSU switch at the back.
I, however, do not have issues starting up the PC. It starts 100% of the time.
having said all of that, the switch on the front of the case might be a bit dodgy? always has been since i got it (lian-li 011d-xl) a year or more ago. It seems like it works more reliably towards the bottom... the problem described above however is very recent, and has never happened previously.
Is this something brought on by the recent BIOS update(s) perhaps? or is this the same HW issue noted in this thread manifesting in a different way?
Sure doesn't feel like a software thing, given that the motherboard button presses do nothing.
i have not been able to intentionally reproduce this, however it does seem to be fairly reproducible as it happened this morning when switching back to home PC from work PC, and once last night when returnign to the PC from watching a movie, and during the day when switching PCs again.
I've tried telling the computer to sleep, and it wakes fine.
i've told it to turn off the monitor after 1 minute, and it turns back on via usb input no problem.
Any ideas?
EDIT: running BIOS 4006 Settings: ... docp enabled with qvl ram, NO amd PBO enabled or overclocking cpu, onboard audio off, ERP on S5 if i recall... has been the same for the entire year.
system is otehrwise stable. no crashing. Running fully up to date windows 11, fwiw
EDIT#2. i updated NZXT cam yesterday. last update had some stability issues... have a bad feeling that may be the cause. I've killed the process, and will wait / see if the issue recurs today.
EDIT#3 my issue is NZXT CAM related. Apologies for the thread spam -
03-16-2022, 06:09 PMcompuwizI too have this issue
I had bought my ROG Dark Hero VIII in late January from Amazon; the box says it was manufactured 2021-12 in Vietnam.
I have the exact same issue described by OP; PC is on everything is fine. After the PC is off for a while, the power button won't work anymore and the system won't power on. Then I toggle the PSU switch for 2-3 seconds or until the remaining LED lights turn off (i.e. the START button); and only then does the system power on and boot up.
I've tried some of the C4/C5 powerstate "fixes" as well and that doesn't make a difference here.
