Yeah, if you are careful, replacing keys isn't that risky - if you are careful. Once you get the hang of it, it's easy, just be slow and careful, and you'll be fine.

Possibly the card is too new? They may be look at the numbers on the card name (450, 5870, etc), and since AMD was using a 4-digit scheme for a long time, the 3-digit could get confusing.

Replacement monitors on laptops are normally quite expensive, which is why I would honestly recommend looking into a new machine, as it will be a lot faster, and will keep running for quite a number...

Check for any updated ASUS drivers. It could be that the ASUS drivers are not compatible with Windows 8.1 Also, check the system event logs and see if they say anything about it.

Don't disable UEFI, that's not the problem. Try re-enabling that, and booting a Fedora image. Fedora usually has support for the latest things, since it is supported by Red Hat.
