unlocked cpu's

I'm considering a couple of new builds and looking at cpu's. Since they would never be OC'd what advantage, if any, would there be in using unlocked cpu's?
edit to add.... one would be for gaming and the other for a multi-monitor office environment.

Hi Heini

The unlocked cpu's are usually clocked higher out of the box for instance 8700 vs 8700k.

8700 - 3.2GHz boosts to 4.6GHz
8700k - 3.5GHz boosts to 4.7GHz

With a 100MHz diference, you wouldn't notice much of a difference if any with games but you'd see slightly better benchmark scores with the 8700k.

If you run the cpu core/cache voltage on auto, the cpu is getting over volted a fair amount and you might can hit 5.0GHz with what the board is applying on auto. Or you can lower the voltage to 1.15v - 1.20v which will give you a nice drop in temps.

Comparing the 8700 and 8700k, it comes down to if you want to pay 50 bucks for 100MHz and overclocking capability.

Lowering the voltage "could" extend the cpu's life with little or no noticeable loss of performance, in this case the 'office' pc? The 'gaming' build would take a bigger hit but should still outperform a 6700K at stock clocks?

Oh yeah,, the 8700k has 6 cores/12 threads and comparing the boost speeds is clocked 500MHz faster than the 6700k's 4core/8threads.

Here's a video comparing the 8700k vs 7700k, it seems to depend on the game or game engine as to how much of an increase you'd see.

Crysis 3 uses the cryengine 3 game engine which shows the biggest improvement in this benchmark.

Ordered a Define R5 and EVGA G3 750 today for the wife's office build, leaning to the TUF Z370 for MB.

Parts accumulated (to date) for the office build...
Fractal Design Define R5 Titanium
EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G3
ASUS TUF Z370 Pro Gaming
Intel i7-8700 (non-K)
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) (CMK16GX4M2B3000C15)..."colors match the MB, haha"
Noctua NH-D15
Asus Black 12X BD-ROM(BC-12B1ST)
Samsung 960 PRO Series - 512GB
Windows 10 Pro | USB
Still need to decide which three 1080p monitirs and if it'll use APU or discrete GPU.

Edited the above post for final build parts..... wanted to build my wife an all "NEW" machine since sh'e been content with my left over parts for 20 years. However, if the on board graphics doesn't suffice I'll install a 'used' Titan X, haha!
