    Yes, you can use a SATA optical drive.

    ATAPI devices are not supported.

    And you can use a SATA Harddrive (with operating software installed on it).

    See page 1-29 of owners manual for M.2 SSD modules installation if you plan on using them to see effects it has on SATA 6Gbs/s ports.

    just get a external usb drive case, Vantec makes a nice one, or get a pcie sata controller card, with a Asmedia chip. I have a maximus ix hero.
