Is there a difference between displays in G74 series?

Hello ROG,

I have one questions about G74... Is there a difference in picture quality between displays in G74 series?

17.3" 16:9 HD+ (1600x900)/Full HD (1920x1080)/Full HD 3D(1920x1080 120Hz) LED Backlight - main website specs

I'm interested in 17.3" 16:9 HD+ (1600x900) display. I want to buy G74 model with not a Full HD resolution for GTX 560M, to gain more FPS, and for a more pleasant, big display image in the office mode. I own Sony VAIO VPCF with 1920x1080 - and it's terrible to my eyes on 16' display.

So I need only 1600x900 version of G74 display. The question is: Does 1600x900 display modification have the same image quality, as other displays in G74 series (HD versions)?

Thank you!

P.S.
Sorry for my bad English.

Welcome, @Tony! The image quality of the Full HD displays is noticeably superior to the HD+ display. See http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?9242-New-G74-screen-dilemma In this thread, @BrodyBoy, who has laptops with both types of display, posts

"Unfortunately, the 1600x900 display used in the HD+ G74s is not nearly as nice a panel as the Full HD option. It has awful viewing angles and tends to have a bluish color bias. Settings can help some of that....but not the viewing angles."

I always find it interesting that those who apologize for bad English always seem to have better grammar and spelling than most native English posters...including myself! ;>{)>

It's only my personal opinion, but I see FullHD as much better display than HD+. For office mode too. I often view two windows one next to another on a single display, so in 1920px width I can view two documents/websites without the need to do horizontal scrolling. It's only 300px difference, but believe me - it's a big difference.

Thank you guys for your help!

I'm gonna think a bit more about 1600x900 vs 1920x1080. It's so sad, that 1600x900 have worst image quality and view angles. Like for me, a font sizes and screen layout in 1600x900 are just more and more comfortable for my eyes. Plus, on native resolution it will give more FPS in 3D apps. I want to buy G74 in an online store, so I can't inspect display quality before I'll buy it.

@dstrakele,
thanks for your good words about my English 😉

Before i bought my G74 i stand in front of choice between HD+ and FHD
Yes HD was prefered as TC said of more performance and better reading abilities
I compare two type HD+& FHD just put it one to each other, and what can i say ? Indeed, both types are really ordinary TN displays with all it's native tech. diseases Glow, limited V.A.,mediocre black level etc
But in same time truly says FHD have little bit less clearly show's it's cons, but not far enough to call it that much better than HD+
that's why actually i bought exactly HD+

Thanks for summing up and referencing my comments, Drew. 🙂

The one thing that I would add, and the last post illustrates the point, is that this is not about a preference for one resolution over another. That's a completely different matter, and everyone has their own preferences.

So it's just image quality parameters I'm talking about. I happen to like 1600x900 on a 17" display, too, but I have both of the panels used in the G74, and the Full HD panel is, in every qualitative regard.....color accuracy & balance, contrast, black levels, viewing angles, etc.....a better-performing LED display.

The only time I'd recommend the HD+ display is for a user who expects to use an external monitor most of the time. Then you could save some money and put it toward other upgrades.

I never compared those two, but since I have the 720p version (BBK8 model), I can say that it sucks completely. The screen is like full of smoke that never goes away. Otherwise it's a nice device.
