How to get dual boot working on GL703

I want my gaming laptop to run both Windows and Ubuntu. However, this Asus GL703 laptop is doing something I've never encountered on other laptops, it doesn't boot into Windows the same way if dual boot is enabled. It gives me a bunch of frustrating errors as a result.

Here is what I see:
--Inform BIOS to boot directly to Windows
* I see an ROG gaming logo on boot with the Windows spinning circle
* Everything works as it should.

-- Inform BIOS to boot off an EFI boot manager (either Ubuntu's grub or rEFInd). Then in the menu I select Windows.
* I see a Windows logo on boot with the Windows spinning circle
* Hibernation boots only go to a black screen and won't boot further.
* Normal boots lock up for 20 seconds before prpceeding to Windows. Later the Event log tells me I got a bunch of Event ID 14 nvlddmkm errors from the Nvidia driver.
* I've tried this on both the stock OEM Windows install and a brand new vanilla Windows install. I get the same problem.

I've dual booted many machines and never had this problem. Is there something special the GL703 laptops do to change how booting works? For now I can mitigate the problem by holding down the Escape button on boot and then selecting the right EFI boot option, but I'd like to find a clean answer .
