8086k - Z370-i - 4000mhz Ram

Hi All,

Im a new poster here, just set up the following rig :

Intel Core i7 8086K @ 5.00GHz Delidded @1.2v - Asus ROG Z370 Strix - Trident Z 4000mhz CL19 2x16GB - NZXT MANTA BLACK/RED - PM961 1TB x 2 RAID 0 - Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti - Corsair H110 Pro - Corsair Commander Pro - Asus ROG Swift PG279Q 2560x1440P G-Sync 165Hz

Anyway for the life of me I cannot get my 2 x 16 gb sticks of Trident Z CL19 4000mhz to run @ XMP 4000mhz, the best I can get is 3700mhz @ CL19.

I've tried starting from scratch (no cpu overclock) after a clear cmos and set xmp and manually the timings then worked my way up to 3700mhz but anything above this speed and the pc bootloops (doesnt even try to load windows), I think its doing memory training but fails and after a couple of restarts it asks me to press F1 to load the bios. I also raided voltage on the sticks to 1.4v and vccio / sa to 1.225 but doesnt do a thing.

So with the sticks @ 3700mhz I have tightened the timings to CL16-16-16-36 (tRFC at 440) and these pass all benchmarks, H.265 benchmark is what I use for stability testing, if I try CL15 then I get a blue screen 30 seconds into the run.

Thinking that I may have a weak CPU I got a mate to test my cpu and memory on his rig and it has no issue booting with XMP 4000mhz (bios 1602).

So can anybody help me get higher bandwidth ?
Bios is 1002.

The memory kit I have is on the Asus QVL list for my board tested @4000mhz (second to last on the 4000mhz list near the bottom) : http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1151/ROG_STRIX_Z370-I_GAMING/Z370-I_memQVL0702.pdf?_ga=2.3055...

Thanks in advance guys 🙂

P.S. I know higher bandwidth can become pointless because of the looser timings, but I would at least like to try and see how they perform at the advertised xmp settings...

The puzzling thing in your post is that your thinking you have may have a weak CPU yet testing both CPU and memory in a friends board there are no issues and it seems to boot fine...kinda eliminates that thought...doesn't it !

Does the board post at default 2133mhz with both sticks ?

Yep, the board boots fine @ stock untill I try XMP, as I said I brought down the speed of the xmp profile and finally it booted at 3700mhz, once at 3700mhz I manually tightened the timings and I am stable at cl16-16-16-36@3700mhz.

VCCIO/SA @ 1.225v , CPU @ Stock (MCE disabled) Tried upping vcore to 1.3v, 1.35v, 1.375v still no luck higher than 3700mhz.

Not sure where I go from here ?

Maybe Asus will chime in and tell me what bios settings they used to get this memory 4000mhz stable on the Z370i.

My mates board on which II tested my cpu and ram was a ROG MAXIMUS X CODE on latest bios completely stock settings with XMP enabled , no issues booting and no issues running stability test (x265 benchmark)..

Saw same issue in another post....8086k...5.0ghz @ 1.2v with similar memory speeds.....what I can't seem to get my head around is the fact that an 8086k is able to run 5.0ghz on all cores at that voltage....yes..the chips may be infact binned to clock higher....but certainly not at that minimal amount of voltage and be stable......and I personally think that plus the fact of how tight your trying to run the memory at that speed is causing your issues.

My 8086k is 5ghz stable @1.21v no issues at all with stability testing, for the xmp profile on these sticks its really not that tight : 2000 MHz 19 19 19 39 58 48 4 10

Its just that this board doesnt seem to want to do more than 3700mhz even running the cpu @stock.

What programs are you running to test stability?

Mate 🙂 , this thread is about my ram issues, for stability @5ghz 1.21v / 5.2ghz 1.28v I use X265 benchmark and a 4k render in Blender and also timespy cpu test.

- clear cmos (do not load a profile or optimized defaults)
- do not load XMP, set manual.
- disable MRC Fast boot
- use Mode1
- DRAM voltage 1.40-1.45
- IO/SA voltage 1.15/1.20-1.20/1.25

Timings:
74809
- Try to boot.

The QVL at G.SKILL seems to be much more accurate than the Asus QVL. http://www.gskill.com/en/catalog/desktop-memory

According to G.SKILL, the limit for Strix boards seems to be around 3600 where the Maximus 'Apex' qualifies to 4266MHz.
