RIIIE CPU Header

Hey peeps,

Purchashed 4 Coolermaster 120mm Sickleflow fans to cool my rad. They do an excellent job but I find them to be a little noisy. I have them running from the PSU but i'm thinking of running them from the CPU header, that way the RPM will change auto with CPU load. However, I need to know how to run 4 3pin fans from 1 CPU header?

Also, I'm in the UK so links to where I can get the cable from would be great.

Cheers

Hmm... How about getting a Zalman Fan Mate 2 Fan Controller?
They're less than a fiver, can help keep them noisy fans quiet, whilst keeping them powered from the PSU.

Alternatively, if you're more like me 'poor as f**k'. You'd go down the DIY route and knock something up! All you need is visit Maplin for a variable resistor, some heat-shrink and buy a cheap soldering iron kit. Then you can pretty much follow this non-nonsense guide:

Once you've learnt how to do this, you can later move onto more sophisticated projects and make uses of the soldering kit you've purchased.

Will the CPU header support 4 fans?

Use your chassis headers. there should be a setting in the bios to follow your cpu temps.

Personally, I wouldn't want to try!!

hmmm.... I have 3 chassis headers I think... I need 4 though... could use a splitter for 2?

Not sure how many headers there are but yes you should be able to use a splitter. Most fans don't draw much power so it's only an issue if you have industrial fans or you try to run something like a water pump with the header. In those cases I would carefully compare the specs on the output of the header and the draw of the device(s) attached to it.

So I found this information which is per fan.

Power consumption: 4.2W
Current (Ampere): 0.35A

Then I found this info regarding my fan headers.

The fan connectors support cooling fans of 350 mA-2000 mA (24 W max) or a total of 1 A-7 A (84 W max) at +12V.

Looking at this, would my CPU fan header support 4 fans on a splitter cable?

Yes. The cpu headers on current boards have to support up to about 20-24W because some people use them for pumps. Most DDC pumps max at 20W so that means you can run a pump from the CPU header. So by comparison you can run several fans since they use much less juice.
