Hello Guys,
i got the Maximus Extrem XI and put 2 SSD in the Dimm.2 Slot. I got on my GPU only x8 lanes. I think this Slot is usless if there is no chance to get x16 lanes.

Use the dedicated M.2 Slots that use the PCH ...the PCI-E Slots for GPU's are CPU only.....this is outlined within your manual. If you must use the DIMM Slot for your M.2 you will be limited to x8 on your single GPU or x4/x4 on a SLi set up.
There is negligible difference in noticeable speeds with GPU's running x8 vs x16.....
So its hardly "useless".....otherwise upgrade to a HEDT system which will provide you with more PCI-E Lanes at a premium price.
This was already answered in detail within this Thread in Post #2Last edited by rjbarker; 01-10-2019 at 06:49 PM.

Hello everyone, I take advantage of this discussion because I have the same "problem". I have a maximus xi extreme with 8700K and 2 M2 Samsung 970Pro 512gb. From what I've read here, if I insert two ssd m2 into the DIMM2 adapter, my speed of the pci express slot will go from 16x to 8x, in the case of sli at 4x + 4x right? If instead I insert the two M2 on the motherboard slots, what speed limitations could I have in general? thank you very much to those who will answer me. Francis

I just installed this mobo and I am scratching my head figuring out HOW TO MAKE USE of the beautiful DIMM.2 feature without loosing everything else.
Asus you could have written a chapter in the Manual about this, not 1 line of telegraphic text
""""Configuration options: PCIEX16_1 + PCIEX16_2 / DIMM.2_1 + PCIEX16_2 / DIMM.E_1 + DIMM.2_2"
That's all...!
No mention of other factors or combinations or effects of choices...
For now I have put my INTEL 750 SSD PCIE card in PCIE16_3 slot at 4x (losing sata 5 and 6)
I have of course a GPU in PCIE16.1 16X, and I'd like to know what happens if I put 1 or 2 SSDs in the DIMM.2 piece. I am about to experiment, but...! Asus one day will make useful user manuals, not just descriptive ones, I am sure!

REsults
I moved my PCIE SSD to PCIE slot 3 (4x, losing SATA 5and 6)
Moved the 2 NVMe SSDs from under the southbridge headsink to the DIMM.2 and it works, albeit my Geforce card runs at 8x.
this seems the most we can get from this platform. Performance wise good. "Normal" windows and office usage with x299 platform was underwelming. i9 9900 KS is brilliant here.

BTW, moving the ssd's I removed the metal top of the PCH (below is another heatsink, not as big, but not small at all) and I don't feel like putting it back, it seems a useless thermal misconception. Without it THE pch is breathing freely, with more room for air circulation and the LED lights look different but cool enough...
