THE SOLUTION TO FREEZES - LOCKDOWNS - RANDOM DISCONNECTINGS OF HDD CONNECTED VIA USB 3.0 ENCLOSURE TO ASMEDIA CONTROLLERS

I have searched all the internet for the last 5 days for a solution regarding my random disconnecting/reconnecting of my HDD connected to Asmedia Controllers via USB 3.0 enclosure.

I did all the following without any luck:
    - Updated the BIOS of my MB (Asus P8z68 V-Pro)
    - Updated the firmware of AsMedia ASM 104x contoller
    - Updated the drivers of Asmedia ASM 104x controller
    - Lowered the PCIe frequency to 100Mhz
    - Changed cables
    - RMAd the USB 3.0 enclosure

Nothing worked until i bumped against the following forum:
    http://forum.mediasonic.ca/viewtopic.php?f==27&t=1234

As they proposed, I uninstalled all the programs that check the SMART data of all connected hard drives occasionally and voila, NO MORE RANDOM DISCONNECTINGS !!!!!

Try it out and spread out the word !!!

    ### Asmedia xHCI firmware update

Has anyone tried `Asus USB 3.0 FW Update Tool v2.0.exe` (Version 120816-02-02-06D Pour Windows Xp/Vista/7/8 32/64bits)?

Why isn't this software updated through the EFI update?

Are there other non-EFI firmware updates for the board?

Running Asmedia.exe returned a message similar to "The update didn't complete". Running `20121108_FWUpg1181/ASM104FWUpdate.exe` seem to write `xHCI_v120816_02_02_6D.bin`to the device<https://www.dropbox.com/s/qziziu395eb507b/xhci.PNG>.

    ### ASMedia xHCI Controller issue

Problems that this update resolve are described at <https://github.com/mirror/asus/issues/2>

    ### System

    Asus P8Z77-M Pro

    Thanks for pointing this out!
Update also works 100% correct on Rampage 4 Extreme.
As far as I know the only firmware outside of the BIOS/EFI you can update on the R4E are: Intel Management Engine FW, GbE FW (both also part of BIOS), ASMedia USB3 FW & ASMedia SATA FW.

Both revisions on station-drivers are newer than what ASUS offers via their download section for the board.

Edit: Tested the XHCI firmware update, too. It works as expected.

In U3Firmware directory run "firmware.exe" and it will inform you if you need the update or not. (Mine did)
(For what it's worth the firmware update v110914 is the latest, and is sourced from ASUS. Not sure which board it came with but I've confirmed they are exact same chipset.)
Why did you say that, in properties the Modified Date of xHCI_v110914_00_02_51.bin is Wednesday, ‎September ‎28, ‎2011, ‏‎11:32:10 AM,
    Modified Date of xHCI_v110930_00_02_53.bin is Friday, ‎September ‎30, ‎2011, ‏‎3:22:31 AM
and from ASUS tool Modified Date of xHCI_v120816_02_02_6D.bin file is 10.16.2012

    Thank you

To make it absolutely clear and answer the question below at the same time: BIOS/UEFI, Intel ME, GBE are parts of the SPI Flash while the rest are not. This is why the later can not be updated with a UEFI revision.

I downloaded the latest SATA FW (1b21-0611_v0951.exe), and all it contained was a bin file (1b21-0611_v0951.bin). What am I supposed to do with that, or don't I need it?

Simple upgrade to latest seeing as it's packaged weird at station drivers:

Download this zip and extract it: 20121108_FWUpg1181.zip

In the folder you extract run ASM104FWUpdate.exe and it will update the ASMedia XHCI controller firmware. (USB3)
If your firmware is currently up to date, it will inform you and exit.
You must reboot when update is complete.
