I didnt HAVE A 7940x I went to the 9940X for more cores and gut lucky with an extremely good sample on the first try, first time ever. My last chip which I still have and will deploy to another build is a 5GHz 7900X that was delidded and binned by SL. Bought my luck with that one and also bought it with a 1 year warranty from them because as soon as the lid comes off the Intel warranty goes with it.
I see shopify and I want to puke. My wife thought it made for a good shopping experience and got scammed. the seller is still on there only removed the contact info. She ordered several hundred $$ in product in November.....No nothing and finally just reported them for CC fraud.
Looking at their product image that IHS hasn't been lapped and it doesn't state it has either. properly lapped surfaces are very shiny like a mirror. How well it works is subjective. Honestly im not too convinced with the whole change in adhesive affecting the height. If it was higher before how was it making contact with the die? Whats matters is die to IHS. If you glue it back on the relid must be certain that the contact with the die is good and you are not using a monoblock is all that matters.Last edited by JustinThyme; 01-22-2019 at 02:00 PM.

This is my direct-die 7980XE and an old loop that hasn't been cleaned since April 2015, just water change every year and many quick disconnects in the loop.
There is a big temperature difference for me as well when pushing clocks, but it's still actually way better than what I had with the lid still on. Using EK EVO Full Nickel. I could try to make the contact better as with my first attempt I got 1-2 cores pushing to 105c with any higher load, noticed the block needed to be painted with LM a little bit more at the edges or the LM would not "stick" to it at all from the die (surface tension?). After that I didn't bother anymore, next time sure when I need to take off the block. My 7900X seemed to like the direct die very much.
Edit. Found also my 7900X with direct die on test bench with simple 360mm rad.

Almost 20° difference between the coldest core and the hottest, it's weird for direct die, indeed

@ 4.8 hottest core after it heats up is looming under 85C. I actually have less heat issues with this chip than I did with a 7900X. PC enthusiasts are a strange breed indeed. Intel goes to using toothpaste instead of solder and the whole world lost a revolution that day. So after all the crying and complaining they go back to solder and the entire world is now crying about that. I wanted more cores with acceptable temps without having to void the warranty on an expensive venture. I was at first thinking about the 9960X but a a few nudges by other members and a little research shows the 14 core to be a sweet spot for core count and clock speeds. Im not dialed back on any cores. Thats a solid 4.8 on all 14 without a chiller, LN2, Helium or phase change. Every time I look at leader boards and wonder how it the world they get that....On the ones that show temps and it says -40C that tells it all.

I wish I could continue to nerd out like this anymore but I think this computer will be my last major project for a long time. I have well over 10k into it and there is so much more that could be done but I gotta call a halt to it. There comes a point where I have to ask how much is too much. 6 cores always got me what I wanted and the only reason i went to 10 was cause of the PCI-e Lanes. In the end I got an amazing computer in a stunning case. I will one day go hardline but I draw the line now on getting refreshed CPUs. I also won't get a 2080ti until monitor prices come down where i can run 4k, with G-sync, HDR and over 120Hz on something 32 inches and not pay over 3k for it. Not too impressed with the Intel 905s so no need to go down that route, tho I kept my Hyper x16 incase they come out with reasonable priced m.2 versions where I can run 4, 6 or 8 off of them.
Furthermore I think the HCC line is going to slowly die. Intel's latest offerings of 6-8 core chips that can go 5.0 easily is a game changer. I think in the future they will add more PCI-e Lanes there as well and the HCC will continue but nothing below 14, 16 or 18 soon.Panteks Enthoo Elite / Asus x299 Rampage VI Extreme / Intel I9-7900X / Corsair Dominator RGB 3200MHz
