That is what i figured and that is enough apparently not to make full contact with the cooling plate, especially if the cpu's IHS is even slightly convex. That is why I really like that copper IHS that is milled flat and takes into account the less amount of glue and TIM. You can only compensate so much with extra thermal paste.

What? Ive always heard the bigger the blob the better the job!
Im not delidding my 9400X but Im interested to see what you come up with using the new lid as eventually my 7900X is going back into service. It doesnt have a warranty anyhow as the 1 year from SL is up. Either way Im not going back to a monoblock. I remember having issues the first time I went to boot and though Id screwed the pooch and bent something. Turns out after inspection I just tightened the screws to snug then just a red p@#*y hair more and no further issues other than the two hot cores. My IHS was flat, wouldnt sping and a straight edge across it wasnt letting light through.
Im thinking direct die though.

That gap is there to ensure there’s enough paste to maintain uniform conductivity between both surfaces as it creeps and pumps out during the lifetime of the processor. Vertical installations encourage a degree of paste creep, and torque from mounted coolers flexes the PCB, pushing some of the paste outwards, so the gap and TIM viscosity is carefully set to minimize the impact. Mass production always needs protective measures that we don’t neccesarily see purpose for at first approximation.

Theres people out there doing it and swearing they get better results. Im not going there, too much risk. Have to get the lid off first which means heat the life right out of it. I think Der8auer did it but took a few ruined and cooked chips. He had one he bent that crap out of a delid tool and when it finally popped it took smds with it. That goof ball Linus put one in a toaster oven and burned himself like the idiot he is. Besides all that I cant see a reason to even think it with a 9940X at a solid 4.8GHz. It might do 4.9 or more but I dont have a chiller. Got it to boot at 4.9 but the first hint of a load the screen turned a funny shade of blue.....
That doesnt mean I cant play with my 5Ghz 7900X though. It will go to 5 and run some bennches but it gets HOT..like 95 and thats just too toasty. 80-85 maybe a 90 peak but thats pushing it. I dont think its the cooling capacity as much as it is just getting the heat from the die into the block and a direct die would help.Last edited by JustinThyme; 01-24-2019 at 08:54 AM.

Yeah lol I have delidded soldered chips before best way is to use your stove if you have on with a glass top, heat it slowly until it comes lose, huge risk still that you will cook the thermal sensor and your chip will never work again, my old 7900x did 5Ghz on 1.3v but like yours temps are just to high due to the smaller die.

I think 4.8 is where I would stop give a damn and that is what I hope after I finish with my 7940X....anything beyond that sounds hard but maybe I manage it through direct die cooling or not...we'll see. The frame is on its way from the US thanks to a good member in overclock.net (Jmpboy). Now the other problem is time since I am well into a work project and can't stop for quite some time....
