Skylake refresh OC results

OK, this started as a high jack in the New 9800X thread.

Please post up what you get regardless of the chip, any skylakeX refresh from 8-18 cores. Please post even if a spud. Not much out there on what these chips will do other than reviewers that all pretty much shared a few ships and all 9980XE. User Benchmark is starting to get a few up there but still sparse. I have the top scoring 9940X there. Whats sad is I got my best ever Firestrike Ultra, Timespy extreme and realbench scores. On 3D marks go to compare with similar CPUs.......Im all alone. two runs up, one at 4.7GHz and another at 4.8GHz

Ill update this post with any changes if I manage to squeeze out another 100MHz or 2. Im optimistic that I can get to 4.9 with more tweaking, dropping a couple of cores back 100MHz (the hot ones) etc. Rad fans on controller didnt even hit 100%! Please do the same just adding an edit to your post leaving all original content.

My sample
9940X @ 4.8 GHz
XMP on
AVX 3
512AVX 5
sync all cores
multi at 48
adaptive to 1.225
svid disabled
LLC at 4
power limits long and short to max 4095
CPU current at 140%
ASUS multiccore enhance disabled
Peak hottest core 85C

If I didn't list it its at default
All other settings to run my current hardware listed in my specs.

Hello

You would have a screen of CoreTemp or other (to see the temperature of all the cores) ?
What frequency / voltage for the cache ?

Thanks
Sorry for my english 😄

The most interesting model of Skylake X Refresh for me was 9800X and 9900X which L3 cache increased from 1.375MB per core to 2.0MB per core.

If you could measurements clock for clock performance gap from 7800X VS 9800X or 7900X VS 9900X at the same setting on same clock speed
on many kind of benchmarks , It may more interesting point.*

Feel free to pick up a 9980XE to bench against your current SKU and post it up.

If folks who get the 99XX post up their results you can draw you own conclusions, however no silicon is the same. My 7900X hit 5GHz and another member had trouble getting a 9900X past 4.5GHz, took him 4 different chips to get to 4.7GHz.

Nice info , However 9980XE and my 7980XE both also have 1.375MB L3 Cache per core. So for 9980XE performance I didn’t interesting.

Im interested in what a year of process improvements has brought to the table as well as soldered IHS with no delid. Either way grab a cold one and sit back and relax to see if anyone posts up the results of what you are interested in. I wasnt going to upgrade from a 5GHz 7900X to a crap shoot with more cache. I was torn between the 9940X and 9960X wanted more cores but not a low clock speed. FYI for all, NewEgg just sent me notification that the 9960X is in stock.

I've tested my 9900X a little bit more and here goes:

Prime95 AVX disabled:
4.3 1.125 V
4.4 1.15 V
4.5 1.2 V

Cinebench:
4.6 1.21 V
4.7 1.3 V
4.8: Cannot do a single run with any voltage.

In the end it's a little better than I initially thought but still way worse than my delidded 7900X. 4.6 could be doable with better cooling but this is in my secondary PC with a very simple loop and a tight packed case. Gonna run it "stock" per core usage setting with OCd cache and RAM.

Im a bit perplexed with the 9900X chips. Another Member had 3 that wouldn't do 4.6 then got 4th to 4.7 with higher Vcore than it should take. My delidded 7900X did better with less juice, 1.250.

I spent the better part of the afternoon trying to get my 9940X to 4.9 and its just not happening. Got it to post at 1.285 but the first sign of a decent load from anything and I was seeing blue. I may mess a little more one day when I get bored but Im thrilled to get it to 4.8 stable as a rock. After I got done playing trying 4.9 I started dialing back the Vcore to see where I could get. Down to 1.195 ATM and still stable with a drop in temps from 85C max to 79C max.

Ill start dabbling with mesh next then RAM last even though it runs XMP just fine and I rolled it back from 3800 C19 to 3600 C15 earlier just for giggles. It boots great and I ran several benches then out of nowhere time stood still. Complete freeze. Got RB up 3K as well, enough to get the 7 spot if I could upload.

I will be more than happy if I manage to get my 7940X to 4.8Ghz all cores. Great job there Justin!
Now if only I could ever receive the direct die frame - what is happening is ridiculous at best with Caseking. They were supposed to have this in Stock on the 12th of December when I ordered in November and almost one and a half month later still no firm ETA! At this point I would be better off if I had ordered the frame from Iceman (alliexpress) even though it had 25 days shipping time. I really don't know what the hell is going on and why can't they call their supplier and ask him in plain English: WHEN DO YOU EXPECT TO MAKE THE DAMN FRAMES! I would have made it myself in a local machine shop if I had the plans all this time damn it!
