Why do you assume they would only change this value for TDP? It just lifts the throttling point.

It's not like people dangle at 105-110c on purpose just the effect of Intel pigeon poop series and thermal defects.

Delid only helps by 20c on a good day brings a little sanity to the game.
110c tj max even if changed really doesn't make anyone feel any cooler as Raja would seem to think although his reply is sort of bewildering

I don't and I never said that I just don't get the reason why change the default at it all comes down to If it's not broke, don't fix it

Folks are conflating TDP, TJmax, Tcase and what prochot are and do. TJmax simply is a arbitrary value used to report DIstance to TJmax. THe CPU does not send an actual temperature signal. What you see in coretemp or any other thing reporting Degrees C, is TJmax - Distance to TJmax... so if the DTJmax is 70 and your TJmax is 100, you see 30C. What's the mystery here?? You can set TJmax to any value you choose and it is pretty meaningless, but may be useful if you use OS-based tools to control load/power based on your thermal management design. Tcase triggers prochot, not TJmax. TDP is not related to either, it is a power calculation (not a measurement - there is no watt meter in there) voltage x amperage. Check for your self, idle in manual override at 1.3V will have a very low current... idle in adaptive at 0.8V will have a higher current indicated.
Frankly, the "hair-on-fire" attitude is hard to grasp. Why would anyone be surprised by this? TJmax has never been a constant and varies across brands. It's a fail-safe (or training wheels) so we can set a warning tempertaure. Unlike Tcase (which is 100C on skylake refresh)

I'd hazard a guess that an SI may have requested it. They do strange things. Not quite as odd as Rowntrees Randoms adverts, but not far off, either.

Yeah I usually don't pay too much attention to tj max
Core temp and under 90c is more of a goal

Point is nobody know why something changes arbitrary or not
Things just change and people say why is it a big deal

Haha yeah I was agreeing with him that the TDP went from 140 to 165 starting at the 7940x not so much it was related , but yeah not much you can done about it I guess at lest you can change it .
