Asus Z390 F-Gaming + M.2 NVMe PCI-E SATA slot disablement

hi

i have asus z390 F-Gaming, samsung evo 970 NVME PCI-E as OS/Boot in slot M.2_1 (top slot by CPU)

bios is auto and bandwith is x4 but 2 sata ports are disabled.

i wonder if M.2_2 slot (bottom) will be the same and will also disable 2 sata ports if i move it.

which slot should be used for OS/boot and what setup to avoid disablement please?

there is no info in manual about sata5-6 be disabled. just only if you use it as sata but i have it in auto or pci-e but still 2 sata slots disabled..

Check the manual more closely... Chapter 3.6.7:

PCIEX16_3 Bandwidth
[X2 Mode] Run at X2 mode with SATA6G_56 enabled.
[X4 Mode] Run at X4 mode for higher performance with SATA6G_56 disabled.

so M.2_1 x4 will disable 2 sata5-6...why? it is PCI-E not sata?,,,,,,what about M.2_2...it will be the same....it does not matter what slot you will use?

and what about if you have 2 nvme? how many sata slots will be disabled then?

If the z390-F is anything like the z370-e (which I have)... The M.2-1 does disable 2 of the SATA ports if used.

However the M.2-2 does NOT. So if you use only one NVMe device... use it in the M.2-2 slot.... and you won't have any SATA ports disabled. If you need to use both, you'll lose 2 SATA slots. It's just a function of finite resources in the chipset. Fairly standard stuff. You'll want to double check the manual specific for the z390-F though.

your board is same like mine difference is just no wifi

ok so M2_2 x4 will not disable any sata ports ,,,manual is not clear....previous post was correct about chapter stating sata5-6 disabled if x4 bandwith used in M.2_1.

however it is not stated that M2_2 will not disable it as well..

so now can i just move evo 970 M.2 NVME with system/boot to M.2_2 slot from M.2_1 without issues or not?

M.2_1 will only disable SATA port if it is run in SATA mode. For your motherboard, that is SATA6G_2.

In PCIe mode, no SATA ports are disabled.

Go into BIOS Boot Configuration Configuration and try setting the mode from AUTO to PCIe and see if the two ports are enabled again.

You will also probably need to set BIOS to load the PCIe drivers first (under Boot from PCI-E/PCI Expansion Devices), or you may get a BSOD from the system not detecting any legacy (SATA for you and me 😉 ) drives to boot from.

You are using a 970 Evo as your boot drive the same as I am. I am running from M.2_1 in PCIe mode with no ports disabled. Indeed my Samsung 840 Pro is running fine on SATA6G_1 and one of my WD Blacks on SATA6G_2.

Well, neither one of us are claiming to be "specialist." I'm practically new here and simply giving you advice (free of charge, even) based on a similar board I have had experience with.

If you ONLY want help from official ASUS reps, just say so so the rest of us can avoid you.

Now, I can tell you that if you use M.2_2 you will have no SATA conflicts. Because that is basically how the z390-E and -F were made to work.

Definitely not a specialist here.

Your motherboard manual only makes mention of M.2_1 disabling SATA ports (specifically SATA6G_2) when in SATA mode.

It makes no mention of any other ports being disabled by either M.2_1 or M.2_2.
