RAMPAGE III EXTREME NEW BUILD

Retired
Not applicable
I'm starting a new build,so far i've got:
A CORE i7 950 4.2Mhz PROCESSOR FROM THE US

WINDOW 7 ULTIMATE (GONNA USE THE 64 bit DISC)

RAMPAGE III EXTREME BOARD.

my question is would it be a good idea to use a 120gb REVODRIVE for the O/S to get a decent data transfer rate ?

Hey, I was planning on using an SSD, but the cost involved in even a 60gb (which is the smallest I'd consider) is insane right now. Personally, I'd go with a SATA HDD for now, then wait until the SSD's come down to a reasonable price. (The Revodrive is currently £200, compared to £25 for a 250gb Western Digital SATA, you could have 10 drives for the price of the SSD). The SATA isn't going to give you a crap transfer rate.

Whilst SSD's are here, they're nowhere near cost effective right now, but that's just my personal opinion. Money no object, I'd get one as the OS drive only, but in 18 months, i'd look at the price drop and think "I could have used that money on a holiday"

Yes it would be since the revo drive is super fast. You will have a very fast boot up time but since you can't install a lot of soft on 120Gb you will need a slower HDD so your software wont benefit of that speed. But the whole process will still be awesome. Revo is a good drive if not the best and according to OCZ it will work fine on your mobo. Go for it I say 😉

P.S. The I7 950 is a 3.06 not a 4.2 and Ghz not Mhz 😛

I would buy it and add a raptor for apps. The price on the wd veloci raptor 300gb is fast and price isn't like it used to be. I own two patriot SSD's one is inferno 200gb and it's fast and almost full so it's time to figure out what to move to my raptor. Personally I wouldn't buy any less than a 100gb. Good luck!:)

I was interested in the Revo drive too. But I found out that It might lacks support for TRIM, since it is using a controller on the card itself. But I yet have a chance to do more research and read more reviews to confirm that. So I suggest you to do so before purchasing.

If you decided to steer clear of it. I suggest using hybrid storage setup, getting a SSD say: OCZ Vertex 2 120GB and a Traditional HDD as a secondary/storage drive. If you got the funds, I personally would go Raid 0 on two of those HDDs for more performance. It could be anything like a pair of WB blue/black or even Veloci Raptors like Pcjunkie suggested. My dream setup would be using Raid 5 with three drives as secondary.

i run 2 raptors in raid 0, and the i have 2 (1) terabyte drives for everything else, does me fine

I use two raptors in raid 0 on my folding rig and they perform well.
