Decision, Decisions, 7920x or 9920x

The x299 chipset is ideal for my use case.. The only thing I have to decide on is the cpu. 7920x or the 9920x. The only differences I noticed is the 9920x has slightly higher clocks, and the cpu is soldered. The 7920x can be delided... How much of a realistic temp difference can I expect with a delid? Which cpu would you recommend?

Threadripper and Ryzen are out for this build.

I would go for a 7920x if its cheaper and your willing to delid it, are you going to overclock? the 9920x would most likely push higher due to being a higher binned chip but its all the luck of the draw a 7920x could push past a lemon 9920x, its will really depend on the price deference I got my 7940x cheap pretty much new 2nd hand I delidded it and couldn't be happier.

Thanks for the reply.
I do plan to overclock. I've never delidded a cpu though. If I don't delid, should I go for the 9920x? Where did you find you cpu, Ebay?

I would recommend delidding if your going to overclock, the 7920x would run cooler than a 9920x once it's had a good delid.

I got mine off a local seller which didn't want it as it was overkill for a gaming CPU, he sold it to me cheaper than what a 7900x is worth, so really it depends on the cost difference between the two.

Hello, I have a 9920x which I got from SL . It was 4.5ghz@1.2v . I am running a dual loop, 2 x 360 rad for cpu. 1x 360 for graphics. Ok, so I have the 9920x@4.8ghz@1.272v hottest core 84C using EK monoblock.

I had a 7900X from SL but had an accident during the install of rocket copper IHS due in part to an improper alignment tool (beware of this if u use one.( I also should have been more careful...) it was a 4.8ghz@1.25v ( I ran 5ghz@1.25v)

My vote is for the 9920X no muss no fuss 🙂

Thanks for the input.. I know these cpu's run hot when OC'd.. My cooling is bit overkill. I have four 480 rads in a CaseLabs TH10A case.. Bottom two for the gpu's, top two for the cpu.

What tool did you use for alignment? 4.5ghz at 1.2v is a pretty average chip hope you didn't pay any extra for it.

The 9920X has more cache though so check some benchmarks to see if it makes any difference. Delidded though + Liquid metal the 7920X would clock higher. Search the Internet to see how good an overclocker the 9920X is.
