CH7 + 2700X Beginners OC guide

arvinz
Level 7
Hi guys—first post here and I'm just starting to read all the stickies on this forum but would really appreciate if someone could either point me to the direction of a good guide on overclocking the 2700X on the CH7 or if you could offer some suggestions here that would be great.

Just a quick background, I was previously using an MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon board and although it was nowhere as robust in its BIOS, it was fairly easy to just hit the 'Game Boost' button and voila you're sitting at 4.2Ghz and all is well. I had to switch motherboards as I tried to update the LED firmware on it and something happened and all my board rgb lighting stopped working, anyway, I digress.

Here's what I got:

Ryzen 7 2700X
Asus CH7 (UEFI 1201)
Kraken X62
G.skill 16GB (2x8) DDR4-3200 (F4-3200C14D-16GTZRX - AMD optimized, Timing 14-14-14-34, Cas Latency 14)

Just assume I'm running everything in the UEFI at default. My goal would be to get the CPU at about 4.2-4.3 with as little voltage increase as possible. Anything higher is a bonus.

I'm new to the Asus bios so it's definitely overwhelming at first but I'm sure as I go through things and learn what everything does, I'll be able to experiment myself on future OCing.

Below 2 step process should see you gain more sustained all cores boost and lower count.

On Extreme Tweaker page set Performance Enhancer to [Default].

On Advanced page > AMD CBS > NBIO Common Options > Precision Boost Override Configuration to [Enabled]

(Note: Precision Boost Override Configuration menu changed to XFR Enhancement in UEFI 1101 onwards)

Thanks gupsterg—will definitely try that—anything in particular I should pay attention to after changing to those settings?

I should also note I'm on latest UEFI 1201.

NP, nothing comes to mind at present.

If i can hijack the tread.

Did it, run Sandra, but Cpuid only shows about 3900/3950Mhz....

Below is UEFI fully stock, I ran CPU-Z bench (top window in screenshot), then opened HWINFO, then opened 2nd instance of CPU-Z (lower window in screenshot) and ran bench again.

(Notes: UEFI 1103, but 1201 behaves the same, polling interval in HWINFO is 300ms)

78805

Now I reboot, enabled PBO and repeat CPU-Z test.

78806

I have had 3x 2700X. This CPU I would say gains ~25MHz less all cores boost than another, depending on application loading it, but this CPU is slight higher than another I have owned as well, so middle of the road IMO.

I have used a ThermalRight Archon X2 with 2x TY-143 on C6H/C7H with gen 1/2 CPUs and now use WC.

Even on air cooler I hit same as on WC.

There is a misconception that the CPU further OC with cooling. I have sat in a room with room ambient of ~12C and seen no gains of CPU frequency vs room ambient of ~22C. If you have decent cooling regardless of air cooler/all in one liquid/custom water cooling you will hit very similar frequencies between them all. Even with WC, low room ambient, resulting low water temperatures, I see say ~25MHz all cores gains above other case tests.

Using Performance Enhancer level 1 may not see you gain much more than using PBO. Level 2 may, but may also be unstable, even when using just PBO I'd recommend stability testing to insure all is fine. Level 3-4 tends to be too much for most CPUs.

3466MHz on 2x8GB Samsung B die is very achievable IMO on Ryzen 2xxx CPU.

So after PBO enablement I :-

i) within DRAM Timings Control loaded The Stilt 3466MHz timings, set Gear Down Mode / Power Down Enable both as [Disabled] and Command Rate as [1T].

ii) Set Memory Frequency as 3466MHz, VBOOT/VDIMM as 1.35V and SOC manually as 0.925V.

78821

Reboot and "repeat & rinse".

78822

Next reboot and "repeat & rinse" I had black screen after entering OS, upped SOC to 0.95V.

78823

Testing so more, this CPU/RAM can do 3600MHz, never tested 3466MHz requirements before.

I'm going to give that a try. I was trying earlier with The Stilt's 3466 preset but it wasn't stable...alhough, I need to review again what I changed in the UEFI.

How do I paste here all my UEFI settings for you to review?

Best to zip txt and attach to post.

First and foremost I'd set a base profile and save.

My Base Profile contains below changes from default:-

Extreme Tweaker Page:-

Ai Overclock Tuner [Manual]
BCLK Frequency [100.0000]
Performance Enhancer [Default]
Performance Bias [None]
Core Performance Boost [Enabled]
SMT Mode [Enabled]
1.8V PLL Voltage [1.80000]
1.05V SB Voltage [1.05000]

DRAM Timings Control Page:-

Cmd2T [1T]
Gear Down Mode [Disabled]
Power Down Enable [Disabled]

External Digi+ Power Control:-

VRM Spread Spectrum [Disabled]

Tweaker's Paradise Page:-

VTTDDR Voltage [Auto]
VPP_MEM Voltage [2.50000]
DRAM CTRL REF Voltage on CHA [0.50000]
DRAM CTRL REF Voltage on CHB [0.50000]
VDDP Voltage [0.90000]
1.8V Standby Voltage [1.80000]
CPU 3.3v AUX [3.30000]
2.5V SB Voltage [2.50000]
Sense MI Skew [Disabled]
CLDO VDDP voltage [950]

Then other menus is personal prefs unique to what you may want.

Say from above Base Profile I did as guide to you in post 2.

On Extreme Tweaker page set Performance Enhancer to [Default].

On Advanced page > AMD CBS > NBIO Common Options > Precision Boost Override Configuration to [Enabled]

(Note: Precision Boost Override Configuration menu changed to XFR Enhancement in UEFI 1101 onwards)

That once stress tested, etc I saved as Base PBOE profile.

Next did as post 7 stated, became PBOE 3466S profile.

As I have in the past done BCLK OC I tried a spot higher this time around.

So next I :-

i) dropped memory frequency to 3333MHz divider, so once BCLK is increased I hit ~3466MHz.

ii) changed BCLK to 104MHz, changed CPU Core Voltage to Offset Mode, with positive and value as [Auto].

(Note: If voltage mode is not as above when BCLK is >101MHz on my CPU it will not go above ~1.275V and crash).

iii) increased SOC to 0.975V (may lower back later).

78824

Now testing RealBench Stress mode.

BCLK OC can be tricky, not just because of CPU MHz, but other HW. Some GPUs, etc may not like the increased BCLK.

First i must admit my almost ignorance and humble, on the dark wizardy of OC ....

So i went to my "Bios" creat a profile and insert the values above indicated....
I get this do far:

78826

However i get Sandra error on stress....Harware Failure...Memtest seems ok for 3 minutes i try...
I need read the post above from the bases, very carefully, and then advance little by little....

Don`t want push my luck others tread, but i can put here some print of Bios options and also help everybody...
(My wife is now complain about too much time here.....offtopic: miss single time available for this :))))) 😉
