What is the maximum PCIE lanes I can have?

My Intel 6700 CPU has only 16 PCIE lanes which I heard is the limit for all Skylake CPUs. My question is, is my motherboard/CPU socket compatible with a CPU with a greater number of PCIE lanes or would I need to get a new motherboard for more PCIE lanes? Thanks!

Hi THX1139

The z170 chipset supplies 4 lanes for a total of 20 pcie lanes, z270/z370 supplies 8 lanes for a total of 24 pcie lanes.

Thanks. If I have to upgrade my motherboard, I will probably switch to AMD and get a Threadripper for 60 PCIE lanes. I'll have to keep putting it off for now.
