Microsoft just released update KB4490481 for the current version of Windows 10 1809, which has numerous "fixes", including a mention of Realtek HD Audio:
Addresses an issue that occurs on machines that have multiple audio devices. Applications that provide advanced options for internal or external audio output devices may stop working unexpectedly. This issue occurs for users that select an audio output device different from the “Default Audio Device”. Examples of applications that may stop working include Windows Media Player, Realtek HD Audio Manager, and the Sound Blaster Control Panel.Last edited by Jan1torEarl; 04-02-2019 at 05:49 PM. I got so sick of Realtek Audio issues I do not install its drivers at all anymore so, problem solved for me and more so as I use Sennheiser GSX 1000 Audio Amplifier & Sennheiser Game Zero Headset. My point is try removing Realtek Audio drivers and just install your headset driver. I see Realtek as a bad program with to many issues so I tossed it out years ago .

i have a theory here.
Do you have the files you decompress from those drivers? o stored on another drive on you computer?
You see I am asking these, since I did have issues like these for more that 16 weeks. i delete these files and make some work on the windwos like clean on the C drive (normal windows clean up) These start happening again as soon i connect the backup driver (mechanical) with my backups. then start appear. Y delete all files from drivers that where uncompressed and make some maintenance. since there no more issues for me.
Belive me i struggle with these.
Try please and me le know. Even windows certified came here, ( i have a friend) .
From my side, i can replicate these issues here everytime, and is windows with the indexing and since drivers files have these file at the open, these can cause issues.
Try and see what is up maybe we discover something.
I also have another weird issues with Samsung nvme when AMI driver support is activated on the bios in the z390 with missing files etc. I am waiting for another one that does not use drivers for testing.Learn, Play Enjoy!

It could be a problem caused by latest Intel RST software. Try uninstall it and test. In my case it seems to have solved the problem; no issues after 4 days of testing.

I'm now pretty sure the problem is the hard drive going to sleep. When I have my power plan set to Ultimate with the hard drive never turning off, I don't seem to have the issue. The problem is that when Windows updates, the power plan changes and the problem comes back. You have to manually change it back.

I did set the option "Turn off hard drives after x minutes" to "Never". No issues for several days.
So I dit set it to 3 minutes. The problem returned.
My next tests will be using other versions of RST.
It is worth to mention that all drivers that I am using are from Asus website.

Today Windows Update Installed This Realtek Driver 6.0.1.8656 , I Uninstalled The New Driver And Installed My Older Asus Driver , The Pop Up DEVICE CONNECTED Happened Right Away With The Older Asus Driver , I am Not Sure If 6.0.1.8656 Is a Fix For The Pop Up Issue , I Prefer The Older Asus Driver , It Has Speaker Fill For My 7.1 Speaker Set Up , Here Is Link To Windows Realtek Driver Update

I suspect that according the audio driver you will get a different symptom. The Asus driver will pop up the new device window, while others will only freeze for some seconds.
So I think you should use the audio driver you prefer.
