Upgrade G20AJ (i5-4460 model with 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD and GTX-745)

Hi, I am new in the forum. I just bought a used G20AJ with an i5-4460 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 1TB hard drive.

I have just installed a Samsung SSD 850 Pro 256GB plus a clean Windows 10 Pro install and gives the computer a massive increase in boot times and responsiveness.

I have purchased a second SO-DIMM DDR 8GB (Samsung M471B1G73DB0-YK0 1x8GB) to double the RAM; should arrive next week.

I would like to upgrade the HDD, CPU and GPU.

Questions:

1) Does the motherboard support the i7-4790K? and, is this the best CPU you can put on this motherboard, or would you recommend something better?

2) I would like to replace the 1TB HDD with a 12TB HDD, has anyone experienced any power/compatibility issues doing so?

3) GPU - has anyone tested the RTX 2080 Ti on a similar G20AJ model? does it work properly with the original G20AJ power bricks?

4) My computer came with only one power brick, how do I know which one I have so I can buy the other one? a link would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

1. it does support i7-4790K, but i wouldnt recommend it, cpu temperature will be too hot, I used i7 4790k before and the temp instantly goes up to 100 C when running prime95 stress test. i7 4790 (non K) will be best.

2. still unknown if the board support 12tb hdd, tried 8tb before and works

3. You wont be able to use RTX 2080 ti on G20aj, it wont have enough power, the maximum intake power for G20AJ is only 410 watt(180+230w), and not enough power cable connector(RTX 2080 ti need 2x 6+2, but G20aj only have 1x6 and 1x6+2 power pin connector) it wouldnt fit as well if you try to use 6 to 6+2pin converter. RTX 2080 (non ti) is the maximum GPU upgrade for now.

4. You should buy 230watt(19.5V 11.80A) Asus power bricks for best compatibility.

hope this information will be helpful

Thanks that was very helpful.

100C for the 4790K sounds awfully hot, were you overclocking it? I wonder if anyone else has tried with better results.

Could you confirm if this is the correct power adaptor I need to buy: Asus SADP230ABD

Cheers,

No, you wont be able to overclock 4970k on G20AJ.

What adapter that comes with your PC? some G20aj models comes with 230watt, if yours was 180w, then you need 230watt bricks. SADP230ABD suppose to be compatible aas well, you also can use 330w Dell alienware X51 adapter (but it will only draw 230w max).

The adapter it came with is asus adp-180mb f

I have ordered the 230w

Can anyone confirm if the asus RTX 2080 Turbo works well with the g20aj? I am confused with the motherboard pins I've seen on other threads

Cheers

Asus RTX 2080 turbo works well.
Set the JDC11 to the left and JDC01 -05 all up.

yeah I can answer them questions also

1) yes the highest cpu is the i7 4790

2) I can't see why not your pc take a 12gb hdd, as long as your using a 64bit windows then your fine

3) if you wanted that size gpu then your need a second power brick that will be 250watts+ how about the rtx 2070?

4) you can buy the power brick off ebay, just search "asus rog g20 power" and your get a few links, their will be price around £60

hope this helps

Thanks guys,

I got the 230W charger from ebay:

I am keen on the Asus RTX 2080 Turbo (https://www.asus.com/us/Graphics-Cards/TURBO-RTX2080-8G/), is this the same you are using spartan_hoplite? Could you tell me if I need to buy additional power cables to connect this GPU to the G20AJ motherboard? (I noticed yesterday that my motherboard has 2 connectors, a 6-pin and a 8-pin)

Cheers,

Ps: I got the i7-4790 CPU running, going well but didn't notice that much performance increase to be honest.

Any help with the PCIE connectors I need for the Asus RTX 2080 Turbo?

Cheers

do you have any pci-e power cables now?

if not then the card takes 1 x 6pin and 1 x 8pin, which is the same on the motherboard

8pin - https://www.ebay.com/itm/8pin-pcie-GPU-Video-Card-Cable-for-Asus-G20-ROG-Power-Supply-30cm-Shakmods-...

6pin - https://www.ebay.com/itm/6pin-to-6pin-pcie-GPU-Video-Card-Cable-Asus-G20-ROG-Power-Supply-30cm-Shakm...

both are 30cm in length, the links are for the ebay.com
