Want to upgrade memory on R5E and 6850K
Trying to learn about memory and stuff. I have 16GB of memory - 2 8gb sticks- in my custom build rig which was built in 2016. I'd like to upgrade it to 32Gb. My first thought was to just add another 16gb but I can't find the exact brand of Corsair memory that was put into my build 3 years ago. I've also read that it's better to put the same memory kits and not try to match.
I have the Intel 6850K with the stated 16Gb of Corsair Dominator memory and a GE Force 1080 GPU. When I had this rig built in August 2016, the CPU and GPU's had just come out. It runs fine but I'd like to increase performance and I understand increasing memory is a good way to do that.
Please note the attachment as it shows the memory part number and timings. Any light anyone can provide for me is appreciated.
Thanks,
Phantom101

Hi,
Well you have been missing out of quad channel all this time on x99 only using two sticks
Doubt it will do all that much performance wise the two sticks might oc easier.
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...82E16820232348
Best bang for bucks performance boost wise is a new gpu.
2080 super....Last edited by ThrashZone; 09-10-2019 at 11:54 AM.

Hey ThrashZone, thanks so much for your help. Do you think the memory you're recommending will be plug and play, i.e. install the memory and the system will set it to its needed timings?? I could afford the memory a lot easier than I could the new GPU. I like the idea of using quad channel. Seems logical one would get a little better performance.
On a side note, it normally runs at 3.6Ghz, I can go into the Bios (3101) and set it for enhanced and it runs at 4.0Ghz. But I think core temps raise a bit at that speed. This is the OC you mentioned?
One other question if you don't mind, I noticed some references to Aida64 on some older posts I was looking at. Is this still a good system info/stress testing now or is there something better. I like to check sys info and stuff like that. I did some benching when I first got this system but none lately. I'm learning I should have done some things differently...like using quad channel instead of dual channel. Thanks for that tidbit. My beast is attached below, it's now 3 years old. It was custom built for me.
Thx,

Hi,
Yes nice build
I would imagine plug and play on that set is realistic
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...82E16820232348
I personally just set default timing manually
14-14-14-34 1T
Set both dram voltages at 1.350v and 3200 frequency and done.
There are a couple other settings too for kicks and a little boost in memory performance
DramREF Cycle Time=374
DRam Refresh Interval 24960
AIDA64 is not free but there are some cheap licenses on ebay too kind of a boring stability test
Best stress tests I've found are free
Blender free demo rendering files
There is also a new one open data
https://www.blender.org/
https://www.blender.org/download/demo-files/
https://opendata.blender.org/
Those and of course free asus realbench is good too it also has a good stress test
Just use the download realbench link here just these are good along with normal 3DMark benchmarks and Cinebench R.20 is darn good quick test

Hey ThrashZone or any others that would like to comment,
Wow, it looks like that memory has really jumped in price. Do you have a couple of other recommendations strictly for my ROG V Extreme board with the 6850K
CPU? Looking for 32GB and based on your quad channel comment, it seems the best would be to have 4 sticks instead of 2.

Hey ThrashZone:
If I wanted to stay with my Corsair Dominator, I see two items that are the same and the same price on Newegg and Amazon ($245.99). I am an Amazon Prime member so I'd get free two day shipping with them. Both are model number CMT32GX4M4C3200C16. I'm liking the RBG models and I know I'd have to download the iCue software to run the lights.
URLs for the two product sites:
https://www.newegg.com/corsair-32gb-...-508-_-Product
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...4M6PYDP85&th=1
The lights would add a nice touch to my PC. The main thing with these are that the timings are the same as what I'm running now, 16-18-18-36. The only difference I see is that my memory is running at 1.20volts and these are listed as 1.35. I wonder if my system would lower that voltage??? Or would the different voltage make a big difference?
I'm assuming these would pop right into my motherboard and I would be ready to go. I may have to check the bios to see if I need to move some memory setting to 3200.
Thanks for answering all my rookie questions. I hope I'm not wearing you out too much.
