Asus P5BP-E/4L + Asus 980 GTX not compatible??

Hi all

I'm trying to build a Frankenstein for my son to learn about computers and play some games.

I'm using an old server motherboard I have plus graphics card but the computer refuses to boot up as soon as I try to use the graphics card.

Motherboard: Asus P5BP-E/4L
Graphics card: Asus Geforce 980 GTX

I've put the power cables into the graphics card and both little lights are white (indicating enough power)

I've tried both PCIe sockets.

I've tried resetting the BIOS.

Windows (10 Pro) is fully updated

One thing: I know that the card is PCIe x16 Gen 3 but the motherboard is Gen 1. But this shouldn't be a problem - it should still start up just with less bandwidth for the card.

I've tried setting PEG/PCI and PCI/PEG in the BIOS without success. If I set PEG/PCI then it won't even boot. If I set PCI/PEG then it boots (using the on-board graphics card) but Windows doesn't detect any extra video card.

Hopefully you can help me figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks in advance

Matt

Have you checked to see if there is a newer BIOS for the motherboard? It might be that some compatibility issues were resolved in later releases.
