Rog Strix G731GW with RTX 2070 ( no DP port )+ Alienware G-Sync- Is Gsync possible?

Hi All,

My first post here so be nice with me please 🙂

I bought an Asus Rog Strix with the RTX 2070 full version that comes with an HDMI port 3 usbs and 1 USB 3.1 on the back.
I am trying to enable the G-Sync on my Alienware G-Sync Monitor which comes with HDMI and DP ports.

I understand that I have to connect a DP cable from my monitor to my laptop in order to able to see the G-Sync option in the Nvidia Control Panel.
I spoke to the Nvidia chat support and they told me that the DP connector is mandatory to activate GSync. Now, my laptop doesn't have a DP port so I was thinking of getting t an adapter .
I have then noticed that the laptop comes with 1 x Type C USB 3.2 (GEN2) support DP function.
I wonder if a DP to C Usb 3.2 adapter will allow me to enable the Gsync .
Any idea from your side?

Somebody on the Nvidia forum suggested that :it has to be a virtualink usb port attached to the gpu to run in dp alt mode and support gsync.

Do I need an adapter?
Do adapters work ?
Would you suggest any? Are you having the same issue?
Thanks a million ,
Pierpaolo

Hi all,

I have received a DP to USB connector which didn't help the thing at all.
The laptop doesn't see the monitor at all.
Any chance you can help me out with this issue?
Thanks all.

To my knowledge and hope I'm wrong. There is no way to hook up your laptop to an external G-Sync monitor and have it be compatible.

But I did find this post, which conflicts with my thinking. Suggesting Thunderbolt to get gsync working -

Hope this is of help.

You are not wrong - I've recently bought an Asus Rog G731GW and that was my main concern, already having a PG348Q 34 inch Gsync monitor.

All you need is a USB C to DisplayPort Cable 4K@60Hz(Thunderbolt 3 Compatible) cable and both 3440x1440 with 100 Hz and G sync unlock in Nvidia Control Panel. And boy, what a difference from just using HDMI...
