Rampage VI extreme-What are VRM limitations when overclocking?

Hi there, I'm planning on buying new 10980XE CPU,cuz it's cheap and really I don't want to change my mobo, cuz $$$....But, I was wondering, is it possible to OC that CPU on my mobo? What are VRM limitations on this mobo? Are 8 pin and 4 pin CPU power connectors enough to pass around 500W? If someone can cast some light on this topic, it would be very much appreciated.

Have a look at Elmor's post 149 in this thread:

    https://www.overclock.net/forum/6-in...thread-15.html

Summing up, for high core count like 10980xe 2 eight pin are needed if u wish to push it with OC, along with a good power supply (I would choose a >1000w platinum or Titanium if u have a 2080Ti for example, >1200 if u have SLI). The more phases=heat spreaded=less temperature, so if the board has a quality heatsink (plus fans or minifans like Omega or Encore cases), the VRM should not reach 100 degrees even using AVX loads (the total time depends on the case airflow/extra fans/ambient and other variables). U can also go with an APEX VI and put a waterblock on the VRM.

Using here a delidded 7980xe with Direct Die and Watercooling (4.8avx-4.2avx512) on the Omega with stock heatsink/minifans:

VRM temperature after 20 minutes of cycled rendering.

If u don't see the images properly, download them!!!

I am thinking to upgrade to a 10940x (my GPU 2080Ti), do you think my 750W Dark Power Pro 11 is enough?!

Your cpu will not consume as many watts as the 10980xe, but if u push it hard with OC (to 5GHz or more) and use renders or AVX, your power supply could fall short. A 2080Ti overclocked with shunt mod or with an unlocked bios sums, so do the rest of the components.

Power Supplies should ideally have a margin above the maximum load, so a 1000w would be ideal for these Intel HCC plus a 2080Ti, disks, LC, etc. But u have to check it for yourself, your 750 might be enough for your daily usage.

Restsugavan, a mate here in the forum, said they are coming soldered.

    Same according to guru3d review:

Thanks for the info..So basically my rampage VI extreme is pretty much useless for OCing 18C CPU....

Mark I’m using i9 7980xe on the rampage vi extreme water cooled and have oc’d it to 5ghz
I run normal 24/7 at 4.5ghz but board for me overclocks beautifully.
    Just my opinion 🙂*

Yeah, mine too with 7900x with monoblock. It's good to hear other people results from 18C OC on this mobo.

Nope, u can overclock your future 18c until your 8+4 eps limit amps.

Rampage VI Extreme also needs VRM watercooling to maintain high loads during an extended period of time to avoid throttling.
