The x299 platform is good for gaming, in some games performs better than a 9900K and in others falls back. Not only the cache is important, but the memory frequency and timings. 3600 and above with tight timings help in managing some more fps...

It can be gaming everyone , but its advantage features didn't using by games.
If game optimized their code for its advantage features this is the ultimately gaming system.
However due it was the first AVX512 within 2 FMA 512-bit units per core. Neither games calling the 2nd FMA 512-bit port at all now.
The games almost utilized port 0 and port 1 of Skylake X SKUs like Skylake S and other CPU. Thus it will performing on par with Skylake
Based Microarchitect CPU ( Skylake S / Kabylake S/ Coffeelake S / Whitkey lake S/ Comet lake S).
When coming to cache as I said before. Games didn't love Mesh interconnect and it caches .Core i9 7980XE / R6E 3301 BIOS / Intel 02006A08 MCU 2020-06-16 / VROC VMD 7.5.0.1990 / RST 18.35.0.4635 / ME FW 11.12.80.1734 DV 2047.100.0.1039 / 64GB GSKILL @3.2GHz 16-18-18-38 2T / POSEIDON 1080i GTX + NVIDIA Driver 465.21 WHQL / / 3 x 1TB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS + OMS Driver 18.31.2.1034 WHQL /Microsoft Windows 10 Version 2004 Build 21296.1000 / i219 V PHY UNDI OROM / Boot Agent 0.1.00 / 0.1.16 / 12.19.1.32 WHQL AQC 107n FW 4.2.32 + AQC 2.2.1.0 WHQL. Obviously more cores=more capabilities, but gaming is nice in this platform when u overclock it to frequencies matching the ones in the 9900K, except for mesh which allows only 30-32x in a 18 core (under 1.2v) vs 45-50x in the 9900K ring.
U can have a look at gamers nexus review of the new 10980xe:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0vLYcPa3uk&t=1107s
Which confirms what I am saying, enthusiast is more than gaming, but not bad for gaming... Basically, if a game uses more cores the 10980xe reigns, otherwise frequencies are the key so 5.2GHz in a 9900K takes the lead.Last edited by vmanuelgm; 12-17-2019 at 03:19 PM.

I think my optimized default settings was enough for all gaming. I still love my CPU a lot.
Can’t wait to see next Microarchitect arrived.
Icelake X LGA 4189 (Sunny Cove SP) 2nd Mesh with 4.5GHz mesh and uncore speed*
Combined with 1.25MB L2 cache and 1.5MB L3 cache with inclusive styles PCIE 4.0
With 8CH DDR4 3200 MT/s
Rocket Lake S 14++ ( Willows Cove Microarchitect = Tigerlake) LGA 1200
PCIe 4.0 with “ 1.25MB L2 cache and 1.5MB L3 cache “ .
Both will bring seriously competition for AMD.*Core i9 7980XE / R6E 3301 BIOS / Intel 02006A08 MCU 2020-06-16 / VROC VMD 7.5.0.1990 / RST 18.35.0.4635 / ME FW 11.12.80.1734 DV 2047.100.0.1039 / 64GB GSKILL @3.2GHz 16-18-18-38 2T / POSEIDON 1080i GTX + NVIDIA Driver 465.21 WHQL / / 3 x 1TB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS + OMS Driver 18.31.2.1034 WHQL /Microsoft Windows 10 Version 2004 Build 21296.1000 / i219 V PHY UNDI OROM / Boot Agent 0.1.00 / 0.1.16 / 12.19.1.32 WHQL AQC 107n FW 4.2.32 + AQC 2.2.1.0 WHQL. Future always brings better technology, but at present with your 7980xe and a bit of overclock and good settings in both Bios and OS, u can game nicely in your rig!!!

Now that I played with my i7-7820X at 4.4 GHz (4.6 GHz max), methinks that equally OC'd i9-10980XE will be fine in combo with ROG Strix X299-E Gaming II and some colling yet to be determined.
A point of sale are 8x SATA connectors, and support for the RAM I have. I haven't noticed before that a move to i9-9900KS may not play out well with my 3.2 GHz RAM. Yeah, also the M.2_1 slot has a great location.
Can you help a bit with bashing this idea?Last edited by martine-dee; 12-20-2019 at 07:43 AM.

Wait a sec.... I just discovered AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X.
Ya, the price stings but it plays out well with RAM I already have, and I am just reading how it compares to i9-10980XE on other terms.A Quaker here

AMD Ryzen 3000 and Threadripper 3000 correct CCX bottleneck with huge L3 cache size acting as buffers the I/O chip and IMC integrated on package acting like Nehalem Microarchitect in the past. Both combined shining outperform Intel Skylake X and it successor
Cascade Lake X on many tasks and especially Games and System bandwidth intensives tasks.*
Only AVX512 feature and Applications that optimized by Intel Math Kernel with intensive vectors operations bring Skylake X and it successor
Cascade Lake X better. Due it used both 512-bit FMA Units parallel processing. This was Skylake X and it’s successor paradise.*

Hi,
lol 3960x is a 24 core so 3970x is a 32 core ?
What's to say why compare either to a little 18 core 10980xe
3950x 16 core would be a closer match and better for a gamer.
But then again have you even increased your cache on 7820x
