My laptop has currently the Qualcomm Atheros AR956x Wireless Network Adapter. Will this upgrade be compatible you think?

Considering the age of your laptop, the Intel 7260 is a pretty good match.

There are newer and faster WiFi adapters but would not operate in optimal mode with the HM87 Express chipset.

If you go for 7260 make sure to optimize it for 2.4ghz network or you'll suffer. I have upgraded my g750jz and after i finally fixed it it works fine, otherwise its laggy in online games.
