ZENITH II EXTREME Linux & Bios bug

ylemoigne
Level 7
Hi, it seems there is many issue with bios and hardware support. The purpose of this thread is to get some love from ASUS for their linux user and to help each other with supporting the Zenith II Extreme motherboard on linux.

At this time, using bios 0807 and kernel 5.5.2 we have the following issues.

Part I - Bugged bios ACPI on I2C devices.
On kernel start, we get a bunch of error :

févr. 16 15:20:54 panzer kernel: ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Failure creating named object [\_SB.I2CA.WT1A], AE_ALREADY_EXISTS (20191018/dswload2-323)

Part II - Unsupported Audio (PCI).
On boot we get
kernel: snd_hda_intel 0000:23:00.4: no codecs found!

Which is

# lspci -vvkPPnn -s 23:00.4
20:08.1/23:00.4 Audio device [0403]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Starship/Matisse HD Audio Controller [1022:1487]
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Starship/Matisse HD Audio Controller [1043:874f]

It seems to be specific to the asus subsystem.
I made a bug report to kernel developer at https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206543

Part III - Unsupported Audio (USB).
Strange issue on boot

kernel: usb 9-5: cannot get ctl value: req = 0x83, wValue = 0xc00, wIndex = 0x1300, type = 4
kernel: usb 9-5: 19:0: cannot get min/max values for control 12 (id 19)

Once again, it lead to some asus specific audio device :

Part IV. XHCI Bug (linked to ACPI)
Another error in kernel :

ACPI BIOS Error (bug): AE_AML_PACKAGE_LIMIT, Index (0x000000007) is beyond end of object (length 0x6) (20191018/exoparg2-393)

Part V. Sensor (with a solution)
By default, sensors are not seen. (Probably due I2C/ACPI bugs).
But we can get some value.

Adding
acpi_enforce_resources=lax
to kernel boot parameters allow to load
nct6775
module which provide some vaues :

Conclusion
@asus : Please fix at least your ACPI code. Solid linux support is a good selling point for PC enthusiast which are often the hardware adviser of family and community.

@Community : if anyone know how to fix any of this issue, share your solution with us ;).

Hi,

Have you been able to install Ubuntu or another Linux Distros?

I'm getting stuck at the boot of linux installation here 😞

I haven't been able to work with Linux yet

With Ubuntu 19.10, I also could not boot into the setup.
But it worked with Ubuntu 20.04.

After the setup I had to remove the keyword "splash" in grub's GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT,
otherwise I could not log into GNOME. However, the "splash" paramenter is only related to nvidia's drivers.

Sorry, I didn't get alert on reply :s

For older kernel, you might have to add `mce=off` on kernel boot parameters.

Hi mino,

I'm very glad that there is a solution for Linux users to use Threadripper 3960X & 3970X & 3990X

Thanks for the reply.

Having exactly the same issue with the Zenith II Extreme Alpha.

  • Audio issues should be "fixed" in the next coming days/weeks in the upcoming release candidate of Linux 5.8.
  • ACPI / I2C issue remains present
  • Also had to disable "splash" in grub
  • XHCI issue remains (is this related to audio stuff?)
  • I'm running the latest BIOS version (1003 at the time of writing)
  • Does anybody know of a package/repo where there is Aura support? I -really- would like to have something other than the rainbow vomit on Linux.

Non-Linux related: my QVL supported 256GB memory kit F4-3200C16Q2-256GVK only runs on 2666. Any higher crashes / bugs out instantly on prime95 with Large FFTs. At 2666, it can run for about an hour, then the entire system shuts down.

Hope there is some support from Asus about all this.

Edit: I'm running Ubuntu 20.04. Tested with the stock kernel and the recently released 5.7 final version as well.

Hi,

I'm surprised that no one have replied yet.

Does that mean that no one is using Linux with Asus Zenith II Extreme?

Or maybe, it's only me who's having this problem?

I have the same problem as this post in the link below.
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1204948/stuck-in-hardware-check-usb-audio?newreg=14b355aa32dc4a5681a...

Any help would be very appreciated. As for now, I'm not able to run any other OS, just Windows.

I have the same problem.. Have tried a lot of different boot params, but not been successful.

I'm running 3 OS, Windows, Linux Mint and Ubuntu. The problem is the way you have to configure your BIOS to run for the 3 of them to work, then prepare the hdd, sdd, nvme to work with the same partition tables.

For example, with this card I could never install linux mint with the windows partition table booting in UEFI mode

Other thing is that some Linux Distros has to be runn in legacy mode.

For example, with this card I could never install linux mint with the windows partition table MBR booting in UEFI mode
hope that this help!

I can confirm. I'm using Arch Linux with 5
8.14 kernel. I had just upgraded from a rampage iv black.
