ROG G752VSK fan always on

omeggga
Level 8
I've had this laptop since september 2017 and my god, I love this thing. Problem is though that lately the fans have been constantly on, if quietly. To be honest, I'm scared of opening this thing up and cleaning it, as the last time I did something similar on my old PC, I... disengaged the thermal unit and messed up the paste.

I was wondering if installing some graphite thermal pads was possible or at all needed for this operation. Or if this cleanup is even needed, as this may also be a software issue.

I look forward to hearing solutions! ^^

EDIT: At idle, CPU is at around 60ºC, this normal?

I've had my G752VSK about two years. Normal idle temp is about 45C.

Here's a list of drivers and programs I have updated on my laptop:

Open your ROG Gaming Center and ensure you are in Standard Mode:
G752VSK, G75VW-3D, G51J, G1S
Homebuilt Windows Server

It sometimes boots in extreme for no bloody reason. Anyway thanks for the help, but I have issues with some of the software you listed: some like "GameFirst V" and "ASUS ME Firmware/Driver Update Tool" simply aren't in the official driver page. Some like "ASUS Splendid Video Enhancement Technology " and "Sonic Suite" simply either don't install or don't work on my PC.

I appreciate the help nevertheless!

EDIT: That pic was taken with my laptop plugged in. This is with my laptop unplugged

All three of your pictures of your ROG Gaming Center show that you have it in Extreme Mode. Can you switch to Standard Mode?

As for the drivers and programs I have listed, they work very well.

Hi.

I'm sorry if it seems like I'm bashing you for this, but it seems you didn't read the post. The first picture was taken in extreme mode yes, but the remaining two pictures were taken in standard. That said, I don't think you listened to what I had to say about the programs. If you did, you would have at least given me a link to some of those apps...

Anyway I managed to temper temps down by cleaning the laptops exhaust, but, undoubtedly, I'm going to need to change the thermal paste at some point in the future. Thanks anyway.

Looking at your ROG Gaming Center pictures, I saw Exxxxxx (Extrema and/or Estandar). Everything in small print I only saw the "E", I was looking for an "E" on one and a "S" for the other. My mistake, your ROG Gaming Center is in Spanish?

What I see is in either mode your GPU is working the same 1443 MHz and the GPU memory is racing more than 4000MHz.

In Standard Mode, at idle, the GPU should be resting (as is mine at 139MHz). And the GPU memory should fall to about 400MHz.

Are you running some other CPU or GPU mod to try to get your temps to work correctly? If you are then you should remove all mods but the ROG Gaming Center program.

You may think you need to repaste your laptop but I think you have a software problem.

Have you formatted your system and reinstalled Windows? Do you still have a copy of your eSupport folder?

I just noticed you have a different G752VSK than mine. Your laptop has an Intel i7 7700HQ CPU, ROG G752VS (7th Gen Intel Core) and mine is the overclocked version with the i7 7820HK CPU. Your model has a different BIOS altogether. (304 vs 305) This is why you can't run some of my drivers and programs.

Here's a copy of my dxdiag file.
G752VSK, G75VW-3D, G51J, G1S
Homebuilt Windows Server

Okay brilliant. So here's what's going on: When unplugged the card is at 3000 MHz and when plugged it exceeds 4000 MHz. I am not using any mods outside of ROG Gaming Center, and windows has been reinstalled bacck in early 2019. If I can, I'd rather not have it come to that but the option is certainly on the table for me.

I... don't think I have a copy of my eSupport folder. Hell to be honest it's the first time I hear of such a folder existing. I'm sending my own dxdiag in hopes of you gaining a better angle to look at this problem.

Hola omeggga,

1. Your ASUS Download Center website is:

https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ROG-G752VS-7th-Gen-Intel-Core/HelpDesk_Download/

The above support page shows either BIOS 304 or BIOS 302.

2. Your ASUS Specification website is:

https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ROG-G752VS-7th-Gen-Intel-Core/specifications/

The above specification page shows the Intel® Core™ i7 7700HQ Processor.

3. My ASUS Download Center website is:

https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ROG-G752VS-OC-Edition-7th-Gen-Intel-Core/HelpDesk_Download/

The above support page shows either BIOS 305 or BIOS 302.

3. My ASUS Specification website is:

https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ROG-G752VS-OC-Edition-7th-Gen-Intel-Core/specifications/

The above specification page shows the Intel® Core™ i7 7820HK Processor,

4. I have no idea why ASUS does not list the BIOS 305 for your laptop. It appears to be working for you, so leave it. There are many differences between the two support pages.

5. I use the IvanRF website to update my laptop (why I have so many updated drivers and programs). Take a look at the website:

https://ivanrf.com/en/latest-asus-drivers-for-windows-10/

IvanRF uses ASUS public sources for all of his downloads. I depend on his expertise to find new ASUS drivers and programs.

6. The ASUS eSupport folder for your model laptop is/was located on the Main drive, usually C:\esupport. There are two subfolders (eDriver and Manual). Within the eDriver subfolder you will find the ASUS Installation Wizard (AsInsWiz.exe). The ASUS Installation Wizard is used to reinstall all the original ASUS drivers and programs when your OS drive is formatted and Windows reinstalled. It is used first (before updating the Windows OS). If done properly you could restore your laptop to near OEM specs. Once the original ASUS drivers and programs are installed, THEN allow Windows to make updates. Once all the Windows updates have been installed, use my list of updated ASUS drivers and programs.

7. I have a "Sticky" posted at the top of the G Series Gaming Notebook forum page titled "Make a copy of your eSupport Folder before formating your OS drive!". Please read through the information provided.

8. Within the "Sticky" you will find instructions to locate and download a Driver DVD from a German website (ASUS Treiber.de):

https://www.asustreiber.de/downloads/category/60-windows-10?start=10

You will have to use your browser translator to locate the G752VSK Driver DVD:

https://www.asustreiber.de/downloads/download/60-windows-10/761-g752vsk-treiber-dvd

9. Once the G752VSK Driver DVD (iso file) is downloaded, save a copy. I use my built-in DVD recorder to make a functional DVD but you can mount the iso file and simple copy it to your OS drive. There you will want to change it's name to eSupport, thus creating your eSupport folder. This is all discussed in the "Sticky".

10. With your laptop restored with a new copy of Windows, eSupport folder installed, and ASUS Installation Wizard used to install all the original ASUS drivers and programs, you are now ready to upgrade your laptop. Here's my list of upgrades with links:

11. One last thought. Looking at our two ROG Gaming Center pictures I notice I have a NVIDIA GPU Perf Limiter displayed: How do you update your NVIDIA display drivers? I use the NVIDIA GeForce Experience program. Just a thought.

12. This is a lot to think about. Sorry for the confusion earlier, my eyes are not what they used to be and those dang pictures are so small.

Same, NVidia GeForce Experience

It's fine, I think you can click on them to make them larger though.

EDIT: Don't know what to believe anymore. It says on the laptop sticker "G752VS(KBL)-GC310T" and in DXDIAG is says G752VSK.

Hey, you are not the first user to be confused by ASUS labeling. You have a G752VSK but having the I7 7700HQ processor. The problem is that model has its' own support pages separate from the G752VSK with the I7 7820HK processor. Using the support page terminology, you have the G752VS (7th Gen Intel Core) model and mine is the G752VS OC Edition (7th Gen Intel Core) model.

Your model has the Kaby Lake processor, Intel CM238 Chipset, and NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 , with 8GB GDDR5 VRAM

My model has the Kaby Lake processor, Intel CM238 Chipset, and NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 , with 8GB GDDR5 VRAM

Both models should use the same BIOS but don't. I don't think even ASUS can explain that one.

When you compare support page driver and program versions, you have to question ASUS support even further.

Look you have a G752VSK, the dxdiag supports that. Continue to use the G752VSK support page:

https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ROG-G752VS/HelpDesk_Download/

Now back to your GPU overheat problem.

1. I first suggest you reinstall the ROG Gaming Center version 2.7.0 software.

2. Second, reinstall your NVIDIA software.

3. If that doesn't change anything, then I would suggest you format your OS drive and start over, using the ASUS Installation Wizard as I have instructed. If you are worried, please download the Driver DVD iso file and install the eSupport folder. Then simply run the ASUS Installation Wizard.

Good Luck
