Upcoming Maximus xii extreme and PCIe lanes

With the new z490 chipset, looks like it’s still 16 PCIe lanes off the cpu. A single video card will run at x16 unless the DIMM.2 is populated? That’s my question. Will it drop to x8 if you use a m.2 nvme drive in the DIMM.2? If you use any other m.2 connection on the motherboard to run a nvme drive then it will use the pch and a single video card will still work at x16?

The very top slot on the M12E appears to be a x4 pch connection. Is this correct? Thanks.*

Manual came out today. Looks like using the DIMM.2 drops the video card to x8.

Which shouldn't have any noticeable performance issues whatsoever. Most (if not all) cards run just fine at optimel efficiency at x8

Yes. I agree, but there are still limitations with the pcie lane allocation even in this generation that make Intel X299 or AMD offerings more attractive.

I was under the impression Z490 had more PCI-E lanes.

I think it's 16 through the CPU and 30 plus via PCH.

We need more lanes. It's crazy Intel is still playing cheap on this. I'd upgrade from my 9900K but there's nothing worth getting by upgrading.

Not to mention, the Extreme is $250 (50%) more than the previous gen.

AMD 4000 series looks to be in my future.

It was like that even with previous gen. If you have dedicated m.2 then dimm.2 will cut pcie lanes.

Now the bigger question is, how that will work on XII Apex. as it has only 1 m.2 slot, and dimm.2, according to other mobos it will be only possible to use single m.2 without affecting gpu pcie.
Prev gen had only dimm2, while both slots in dimm2 were populated it didnt cut pcie lanes.
