Upgrading the M2 SSD in GL503VS laptop which only has one slot

Hi everyone, I wonder if you can help.

I own a GL503VS laptop, it's currently running a "Samsung PM961 NVMe PCIe M.2 256GB" which is fine.. but it's a constant struggle loading more than one large game onto it (as well as OS) without running out of room.

I'm looking to upgrade it to a "Samsung 970 PRO 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 (2280)". I've contacted ASUS and they say although they haven't tested that particular model it should be compatible.

The laptop only has one M2 slot. The physical installation sounds very easy but I'm struggling with how I can transfer Windows (and other vital files??) from one card to the next before installation?

Could someone link me to anywhere that provides a full account of what best to do? I'm happy to reset my entire computer and re-install windows from scratch, is this the best way or even possible?

    Thank you,
