Is it possible for the SATA port ALONE to go bust??

A few days ago my Maximus Gene-Z based system stopped working. It's been in commission for almost 10yrs so I'm not totally surprised.

Setup here: Please don't laugh!

CPU: i5-2500k * mobo: Asus Maximux IV Gene-Z * RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600CL9 4Gbx2 * GPU: eVGA Titan * SSD: Intel 730 240Gb (OS & Apps) * HDD: Seagate ST2000DL003 (User Data) * Optical: LG CA30L BD-DVD Lightscribe * PS: Corsair HX620 * Enclosure: Silverstone FT03 * Cooling: ThermalRight Venomous X + TR-FBD-12-1600

New battery has been installed onto the motherboard!

I get nothing but a cursor on my screen. The debug indicator say it's in E9: S3 resume PPI missing. While I'm not sure of its meaning, I've been doing some more high level debugging:

I noticed upon boot up, the bios tells me that no drive found. BUT if I get into BIOS, I do see the drive under SATA controller.

I CAN insert a win7 install disc into the optical drive and have the PC boot straight into windows setup so looks like the motherboard is functioning.

I can access both the SSD and HDD via a docking station so it looks like data on both drives are intact although I'm not sure if there's problem w/ boot sector on the SSD. Sadly I don't have another PC where I can test the SSD in terms of boot sector. I was suspecting the SATA controller at fault but given that the SATA are native for Z68 chipset, I would expect the entire board would be fried instead of just the SATA controller.

I don't mind putting together a new PC but I'm still somewhat curious about what the problem is. Just doing my bit in terms of reducing the electronic waste!
