ROG CROSSHAIR VIII HERO(WI-FI) BIOS 2103 High Instability/Crashes/

Hi,
I have tried out 2103 last night (from 1302). I started noticing occasional reboot-crash. After ruling out every device and driver I found the bios update to be the culprit.

The system was so unstable it crashed even in bios with no peripherals plugged in. I have reverted BIOS to 1302 by flashback port/button (lifesaver) and the system is stable again with no issues.

No OC or modifications in bios besides these items:

-DOCP to default 3200 profile (4 x 16 GB Trident Z (NO RGB))
-CPU fan curve to silent and PWM
-Other fans only to PWM, standard

Specs:

Crosshair VIII Wifi
3900x
64gb TridentZ (4x16) - G.Skill Trident Z, DDR4, 32 GB,3200MHz, CL14 (F4-3200C14D-32GTZ)
Samsung SSD NMVE 512 GB 970 PRO M.2 (main)
Samsung SSD NMVE 1 TB 970 EVO M.2 (secondary)
MSI RTX 2080
be quiet! Dark Power Pro P11 1200W

UPDATE 1:

Workaround - set DRAM voltage manually to 1.36V that allows MB to keep stable 1.352V. Below 1.35V I have crashes and reboots. I also set DRAM current limit to 110%/120% instead of 100%.

Tested (standard settings, only DOCP enabled or not):

1. 64gb TridentZ (4x16) - G.Skill Trident Z, DDR4, 32 GB,3200MHz, CL14 (F4-3200C14D-32GTZ)

a) 1302 with DOCP - works
b) 1302 without DOCP - works
c) 2103/2204 with DOCP - doesn't work, random crash/reboot
d) 2103/2204 without DOCP - doesn't work, random crash/reboot
e) 2103/2204 with VDRAM set to 1.36V and current limit upped to 110% with DOCP - works

2. 32gb TridentZ (2x16) - G.Skill Trident Z, DDR4, 32 GB,3200MHz, CL14 (F4-3200C14D-32GTZ)

a) 1302 with DOCP - works
b) 1302 without DOCP - works
c) 2103/2204 with DOCP - doesn't work, random crash/reboot
d) 2103/2204 without DOCP - doesn't work, random crash/reboot
e) 2103/2204 with VDRAM set to 1.36V and current limit upped to 110% with DOCP - works

Also tested on mine friend's MSI MPG-X570-GAMING-PRO-CARBON-WIFI with 7B93v17 BIOS (AMD AGESA ComboAm4v2PI 1.0.0.2):
a) with DOCP - works (32 GB and 64 GB)
b) without DOCP - works (32 and 64 GB)

UPDATE 2:

The issue still exists on 2204.

Hi,

Would you say your reboots/crashes were similar to what is described here:*https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/hq2mku/random_reboots_with_asus_prime_b550ma_wifi_and/

I've been experiencing random black screens with immediate reboot when I enable DOCP.*

Hi,
I would say that it's the same crash. However in my case it also occurred sometimes without DOCP on 2103.

I installed 2103 and temps went crazy. I look and the current in HWM is 52 to 56 amps. What are you guys seeing for current on your boards? Been trying to figure this out for two days of constant crashing.

Min. 42, average: 44-45, max 47 - normal usage
Min 43, average: 46-47, max 53 - benchmarks, games

I had the same issue, I wondered why this bios was stated on reddit as beta while it was not marked as beta on the website some days later it was stated as stable bios on reddit too, from u/ASUSTechMKTJJ. (https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/hiqxds/new_uefi_2103_for_asus_c8h_crosshair_viii_hero_no/)

I installed the new bios via UEFI and set everything on default and started to type in my settings.
Suddenly the pc just reboot, while I´m in the bios....
So it won´t be any sudden windows issue.

Okay, I though maybe bad luck. Lets type in the settings.
Typed in all my stable settings from 1302 and started.
So far so good run a few cinebench test worked good. Played some RS6, everything fine. Chilling in the evening on twitch and discord.
Restart....
Next day I set everything on standard let run a karhu test over 10 hours while I was at the homeoffice.
No issues no restart.
After work turned of karhu, chillin on twitch...
restart.
turned on pc went to bios to check something...
restart in the bios again.
Flashed 1302 on USB2 did a bios flashback => Everything runs smooth no issues.
After the 2103 BIOS was announced on reddit as final bios I gave it another try. (https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/hmiyrm/new_uefi_updates_for_asus_x570_b550_and_other_am4/)
This time with bios flashback to avoid any bad flashing issue.
moved to bios to confirm the optimised settings.
Restart...

Went back to 1302 everything is fine again.

This is the first time since 10 years ASUS Mainboards that I encountered such a messy bios 😞

Exactly the same issue. Is the anyone from ASUS reading this?

I sent them some info on pcdiy@asus.com

I have decided to give the 2103 second change. Will try some advices from others topics here on on reddit. Firstly will do clean flash with Flashback tool. Then will apply DOCP profile. Next I will increase DDR voltage from 1.35 to 1.36 as it is suggested by Ryzen Dram calculator. And i will increase the dram current limit from 100% to 110%. Keep fingers crossed.

Still, if you don't need to have newest bios (any reason 😉 ) - you should keep the 1302. It's rock solid.

Nothing but crashes with 2103. Flashed to 2010 and not a single issue. Going to skip 2103 for sure until bugs are ironed out.

I have been having the same issues. I have been trying to downgrade my BIOS but it fails every time. I have tried easyflash as well as BIOS flashback nothing seems to work. Any help is greatly appreciated.
