Unable to detect a second M.2 drive

i have a rog strix x299-e gaming mb that's about 3 years old. I recently picked up a 2TB samsung 970 evo for more space. I'm trying to install it in the second M.2 slot on the board (the vertical one) and no matter what bios setting i choose i'm unable to detect it - can anyone help with the required bios configuration?

Can you detect it in the first M.2 slot? How many PCIE lanes does your CPU have?

If you want to check out my post I totally went down this rabit hole of crap that is M.2 slots on the the Asus X299. Number one this is PC lanes CPU has if its the 28 one you will have issues and will need to run the m.2 pc lanes from the PCU and not CPU.

oh ok, it's an i7 7800x with 28 pci express lanes ...but

i've just tried it in the main m.2 slot (which has a working samsung evo960 in it) and it doesn't appear to see it in BIOS - also when i boot to a win10 usb i seems to detect a 1gb drive to install windows on.

i put the 2tb nvme in my laptop and ran the lenovo diags on the storage - and it found it, but said size was 1GB

feels like i've got a faulty drive ?
