Feast your ears on this crazy 3080 tuf coil whine

Since Asus ignores my case through their tech support I will post my findings here in case anyone else is interested in reproducing.

Video of me alternating between window size and full screen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMfTrvrAid0&feature=youtu.be

Audio files of me doing the same:
https://vocaroo.com/Pur5vPAzuPa
https://vocaroo.com/dxSvJircyHa

Notes: fluctuations in coil whine, translates to stutters/frame drops

How to reproduce:
This extreme coil whine happens under specific conditions.
1) Download https://www.videohelp.com/software/LAV-Filters-Megamix
2) During installation, select potplayer and madvr 4k profile
3) Open lav video decoder settings, enable Nvidia Cuvid for H/A.
4) Play back a hevc 10 bit video or find any video which will cause gpu utilization to reach ~90%.
5) Listen for coil whine. Notice the noise amplifying when changing to full screen.

Please let me know of your results if you decide to give it a go.

Of course, I have two separate pcie power cables from psu for power delivery.

not something like fan vibrations sounding similar is it seems to be happening on some strix cards...

No fan vibrations indeed. This is the gpu's components singing 😄

Here are two more occurrences but with older generations:

https://www.reddit.com/r/htpc/comments/eijppr/madvr_and_coil_whine/

Noone tried this yet? I found that even on lower madvr presets, the coil whine still happens but is less audible.

Hi, I think many of us just got our cards and then finding the forums to talk about this.

I have the Strix 3090 OC.

I reproduced the same characteristic sound when playing watchdogs legion and cycling between desktop and game. So I guess it does not matter really what we are doing as long as we put a bigger load on the GPU. But we bought this card because of awesome cooling. If someone showed me this sound on youtube videos I would have waited for confirmation on it being solved in new batches. before buying. BEWARE! I also won't RMA until Asus have an official resolution for this. They need to rectify their production on this massive persistent sound overbearing all fans in the case.

I got my card yesterday. I also checked the 3090 0rpm BIOS update from days ago on Asus support site, but it said my VBIOS did not need update when run.

Finally, thank you for confirming. Asus eu outsourced support team completely disregarded my findings and told me to go to the retailer for testing. Ofc there was no way I was doing that, it would have been a waste of time. I hope more of us provide results so we can go to asus with it.

going insane as well with coil whine!

UV as far as possible is the only chance to get it less annoying.

im just waiting for overall better availability of the 3080 cards for RMA

Regards from Greece, industrial electrician electronics expert.

While I do understand that the sound it might be an small annoyance, some people they should understand that when one high performance graphic card this operates, an significant amount of electrical power this does it own journey due electronic components.

When one software application this switching from window mode to full screen, the card will also switch it clock settings and memory settings to FULL Speed.
This event it is normal, electronic components they are getting stressed at a peak value, for few milliseconds, and coils they might produce a sound.
The specific complain it sound as valid but this something expected in the world of electronics.
