ROG G551VW HDD replacement and reinstallation of W10 and Drivers

Hi

A month ago, the HDD from my ROG G551VW failed. Since it is out of warranty, I'm going to replace the HDD with a new one bought separately.

I would like assistance in re-installing the OS as I have never done anything quite like this. Also, Do I need to re -install the Bios updates and other component drivers?
If so, where can I get them?

I'm really overwhelmed and would like some support please.

Thank you.

Recovery from an OS Drive failure can be a disaster. I have done such repairs and recoveries hundreds of times on many different computers both desktop and laptop.
Since this is new to you, I suggest to take the laptop to a local repair shop to have the new OS Drive installed, operating system recovered, and any ASUS drivers added.

Don't replace the SATA spinner hard drive with another, upgrade the spinner drive with a SATA SSD. I would suggest at least a 1TB size.

The ASUS drivers can be found on this page:

You didn't mention weather you had upgraded your OS. If you hadn't then you may be on the hook to purchase a copy of Windows 10.

Now the hard part.....you have a 5 year old laptop....is it going to be worth $250-$500 to repair versus purchasing a new laptop?

Good Luck

This was my first instinct to be honest. I was devastated as I hadn't backed up my data in the last 3 months (got complacent during the pandemic). I knew my warranty had expired but the service center in my country comes up with a bill of approx. USD 357 for the hard disk replacement (and that is without any kind of attempt at data recovery). They also diagnosed a screen flickering issue I had as screen damage that needed replacement too and were looking to charge me another USD 535.

With the pandemic financial strain, I can't exactly buy a new laptop, so decided to try replacing the hdd with a SSD I had with me. The laptop is still good enough for me and the screen flickering is not a major issue.

Regarding the OS, it upgraded itself to Windows 10 right out of the box since I bought the Laptop in February 2016 (or around that time). I'm assuming the License is embedded in the hardware or else I'm screwed as I don't exactly have any key with me. There was no sticker on the laptop.
