Recovery from an OS Drive failure can be a disaster. I have done such repairs and recoveries hundreds of times on many different computers both desktop and laptop.
Since this is new to you, I suggest to take the laptop to a local repair shop to have the new OS Drive installed, operating system recovered, and any ASUS drivers added.
Don't replace the SATA spinner hard drive with another, upgrade the spinner drive with a SATA SSD. I would suggest at least a 1TB size.

The ASUS drivers can be found on this page:

You didn't mention weather you had upgraded your OS. If you hadn't then you may be on the hook to purchase a copy of Windows 10.
Now the hard part.....you have a 5 year old laptop....is it going to be worth $250-$500 to repair versus purchasing a new laptop?
Good Luck
