Maximus Extreme IV -Z - Looking for 5.3ghz onwards. Advice appreciated.

Hi guys,
In my never ending search for speed I am today trying to move upward of 5.2ghz on my i7 2600K.
Sadly, I keep being met with either BSOD 101 or 124.

Settings as follows and working fine for 5.2ghz.

  • Intel Core i7 2600K
  • Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z
  • Samsung 30nm DDR3 running at 2133 9-10-9-27-1T (But dropped back to 1600 for these tests)
  • 3x sapphire 7970HD running at 1200/1600
  • Psu: 1250w
  • Cooling = huge loop with 2 rads, 1 external 1260, temps are not a problem.

I today tried multiple overclocking profiles, but in general it goes like :

  • CPU Level Up : Auto
  • Ai Overclock Tuner : Manual
  • BCLK/PCIE Frq : 100
  • Multiplyer: 53
  • Turbo Ratio : Auto
  • Memory Freq : DDR3-1600Mhz
  • Manual Dram Timings : 10-10-10-30-1T
  • Dram voltage 1.5v (this is 1.3v ram, I use 1.5v at 2133 so know its stable there)

Digi VRM :

  • PWM Mode : Extreme
  • Load-line Calibration : 75%-100%
  • Switching Freq - Manual : 350
  • Phase Control : Extreme
  • Over-Current Prot : 140%
  • Over Temp Prot : disabled

VDRAM, CCSA, VCCIO :

  • VCCIO 1.1v
  • CPU PLL 1.75 - 1.85 tried (normally run 1.75)
  • Full Phase Control : Auto
  • Over-Current Prot : Disabled

CPU Voltage : Offset
Currently stabilises at 5.3ghz with 1.552 volts but in heaven it drops a 101 or 124 error after about 20 stages.

Ideally I would like to get a stable 5.4Ghz overclock if possible. So, unless I have missed something obvious, I may now need to start learning about things I know little about, having never had to play with them. Things such as C states and Skew. Also, i know my offset between VCCIO and Dram volts has exceeded 0.5v so will try tweaking that tonight. Anyone know what happens when its wrong?

Please Note:
This isnt for a 24/7 stable overclock, its used for benching only. 24/7 I runa beautifully setup and stabilised 4.7ghz with 1.41volts vcore. I also accept that the chip simply may not do it... end of.

Hey, I have seen some of your system pics on the main page!!! Great mods and great looking system. Ok for benching why would you want to drop back your DDR speed ??. In benching where as much bandwidth as possible counts then you wanna tune the RAM too and get a balance between CPU speed and DDR bandwidth for maximum performance. But back to your question about CPU overclocking BSOD codes 101 means not enogh CPU voltage and Code 124 means either not enough CPU voltage or not enough VCCIO voltage (Basically QPI voltage). From your current voltage settings I would up PLL slightly to see if this helps although soem chips like less PLL. VCCIO 1.15-1.20 and then raise Vcore slowly until it becomes stable enough to bench. For 5.3 you are looking at around 1.5+ volts in general depending on chip. Especially as your chip takes 1.41 to do 4.7. The chip I tested as part of the Max 5 gene review did 5ghz at 1.4 fully stable on water and benched at 5.5 with 1.58v again on water. I also messed about with a 2500K this weekend doing Linx runs and that took 1.6 ish volts to be Linx stable at 5.5, and this was at -38C on phase change. Ofcourse it would bench at much lower voltage but that was at cold temps!!!!!

Hi,
Sorry, i should have made it clearer that I have only dropped ram speed back in order to ensure its not causing stability issues while i get the CPU clocks up. I normally run it at 2133 9-10-9-27-1T

Heading home soon, so will try VCCIO and Vcore increases and report back. I have never run one about 1.5v so have been a little hesitant to try, but hey, what the hell.

Well thgere is risks at that voltage as your aware. I am not gonna say there is not but so long as your aware of this and willing have a go.

Yep, totally understand. Been benching at 1.58v now for 12hrs straight.. no problems so far. LOL

If your system is cold enough then you can clock your voltages up more if you want. Not sure if that will help as it might just be your CPU has walled Stu.

Thanks mate. benching heaven and 3DMxxx I seem to hit around 70C max temps with CPU at 1.58 amd PLL at 1.75v. A little nervous to push it too much harder, as I cant find much evidence around of folk benching stuff at much higher without failure. Advice and experience on that note very welcome indeeed.

I bench my CPU at 1.64 and up to 1.69 on my SS at 5.748Mhz.

Had the CPU since Feb last year.

Wow, may be an exciting night then. LOL
Just to clarify, what temps do you find acceptable on a 2600k for short bursts like benching, say, 3DM vantage?

You are pretty much at the limit now Stu - if you want to take the chance you can.

The one thing you have to understand is that I could boot into 56x multi on air. So I knew what my CPU cold do. Your CPU might be as I suggest at the limit. Do some multiplier clocking to OS only at a higher voltage. That way you will work out what your max frequency range will be.
