G73JH Memory Upgrade Issue

Hi,

I bought the G73JH model that was available at Best Buy. It came with 6 Gigs of memory.

Tonight I added a two Gig stick (KVR1333D3S8S9).

The BIOS doesn't recognize it.
Windows doesn't recognize it.

CPU-Z can see it though.

I'm wondering if anyone can think of how I can get the system to recognize the memory. I'm wondering if it's a BIOS issue, since I'm still running 205.

I'm having some memory issues since adding the memory, so I'm not sure what to do.

Here's what CPU-Z is reporting:

Slot 1:
DDR3
2048 MBytes
PC3-10700 (667 MHz)
Kingston
ASU1333D3S9DR8/2G

Slot2:
DDR3
2048 MBytes
PC3-10700 (667 MHz)
Kingston
99U5469-015.A00LF

Slot3:
DDR3
2048 MBytes
PC3-10700 (667 MHz)
Kingston
ASU1333D3S9DR8/2G

Slot4:
DDR3
2048 MBytes
PC3-10700 (667 MHz)
Kingston
ASU1333D3S9DR8/2G

It could be a bad stick or it could be that it just won't play nicely with the other sticks you have since they appear to be different. You could try another slot to make sure it isn't just a bad slot. What you may need to do is buy a complete set of memory all at once so it is from the same same model, same batch for optimal compatibility.

I ordered KVR1333D3S8S9/2G from Amazon and that's what's printed on the container that arrived. This is printed on the container in smaller writing: 99U5469-015.A00LF That's why it reports differently in CPU-Z.

I checked on Kingston's website, and that model of memory should be compatible with this laptop:
http://www.kingston.com/us/memory/search/Default.aspx?DeviceType=3&Mfr=ASU&Line=G73%20Notebook&Model...

If anyone else can provide insights as to what may be the problem that would be great. I'd especially appreciate hearing from anyone who has done a memory upgrade on this specific system before, anyone who can attest to if this particular run of memory has compatibility issues with the included memory, or anyone who knows whether memory support was tweaked in the BIOS versions since 205.

Thanks.

The memory I added seems to be based on:
Eight 256M x 8-bit DDR3-1333 FBGA components

The memory that came with the system seems to be based on:
Sixteen 128M x 8-bit DDR3-1333MHz FBGA components

If anyone can comment on whether this presents any compatibility challenges, I'd love to hear about it.

It certainly can. The new stuff is twice as dense with half as many chips. This can have an impact on how the memory controller tries to set up and address the module. That doesn't mean it's incompatible with the laptop, just the existing memory modules.
