    DDR5 Memory

Anyone know how well this new platform works with DDR5? These kits run from 4800 to over 6000. Not sure where to start here. Can’t find anything at GSkill’s site. Timings appear so loose too, but that’s comparing to DDR4 so it’s really not the same. Any tutorial on this or what to buy? I’m not clear on memory here. Thanks.

    Hello,

These types of questions will become apparent after the NDA lifts this week (4th). There's other things to take into consideration in terms of changes to the standard, such as double the burst length from 8 to 16.

Judging from the start with X99/DDR4 the beginning was not smooth, would realistically expect some issues with DDR5 too. Back in the day with DDR4, 3000 kits were impossible to get, couldn't get one to even boot at DDR4-3000 which is now very low binned kit as of 2021, and prices were high. Also some 2800 kits used some weird 127.x bclk with XMP which was horrible.

But in two days we'll see.
    Main: Xeon W-3175X - Dominus Extreme - 48 GB Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4-3200 - Palit RTX2080TI H2O - Phanteks Enthoo Primo - Corsair AX1500i - Samsung 960 PRO 1 TB + Intel 600P 1TB
    HTPC: i7-6950X - X99-M WS - 32 GB G.Skill RipjawsV DDR4-2400 - GTX1070 - Bitfenix Pandora - Corsair AX860 - Intel 750 400 GB + Samsung 1 TB 850 EVO
    All around: i7-7980XE - H150i Pro - Rampage VI Extreme - 64 GB G.Skill 4000 CL18-19-19-39 - Strix RTX2060 - In Win 101C - Samsung 960 EVO 512 GB

dont be too tied up with the primary timings, the bottleneck is not there.
i gain more lowering 2 tertiary timings than from lower TCL/TWCL from 36/28 to 24/18

Most of the "essential" subs you tweaked on DDR4 still take the same recommended values. TRRD_S (Ras to ras delay S)=4, TRRD_L (Ras to ras L)=6 or 4, tFAW (four act win time)=16, tREFI 65535 (don't use 262144 even though it can go that high, you're risking instant stealth memory corruption or BSOD if the RAM heats up), tRFC (needs testing depending on your sticks...Hynix and Samsung may work at 260-280, Micron may need 350-400+, if TRFC is too tight you'll either fail to post or instantly crash), tRTP=8, tWR=16, and so on.

Tertiaries take some research. Look out on the forums for people who post their daily stable terts and what RAM chips and bins they are using, pay attention to VDD, VDDQ and VCCSA and go from there. Micron sticks will not take many of the same subs or terts as Hynix or Samsung. If your AIDA64 write speed ends up half of your read speed, you definitely messed up on some terts (usually some _dd or _dr values).
