Core Parked

Hi,

A noob question: Is it ok unparking cores? I noticed in resmon/CPU that I have 4 cores (from 😎 parked. I proceeded to unpark them but I want to know that it's safe.
I know this is a solution for battery duration but is there any other reason for parking cores?
I also know some old games don't like multi core but 4 or 8 is the same thing...

4 vs 8 won't make a difference in game compatibility.

As to whether it is safe? Sure but I don't know why you'd want to. Windows will enable those cores if it needs them so why force them on?

hmmmm, I read an article that claims some micro-stuttering in games due to parking. I wonder myself if it's true...

It's possible. If you are experiencing stuttering then give it a test. If you aren't seeing a problem then why bother?

I also considered unparking mine to see if I would notice any major/minor improvements in gaming and/or everyday use of my laptop. But honestly most games dont take full advantage of four cores so 8 constantly running wouldn't really benefit much. Like you said as well its a feature to keep your battery from dying in 30 min and Ive seen many users complain about the cores heat increase when all 8 are enabled. I know these beasts have amazing cooling systems but why make it work harder without much benefit? Sounds like a nice way to shorten its lifespan

All that being said I'll still probably try it later tonight to see if what some of these users on other forums are claiming to be true

I was reading this exact thing on another forum recently. Try it and see, it's only a Windows registry setting that it affects and nothing that goes beyond normal CPU specs.

If the cores aren't parked you MIGHT not have TurboBoost available as it can't C-state the cores though - I'm not sure, record the CPU frequency or run some single threaded tests with parking disabled.

I'll try and give it a go on my G53SX later if I have time this eve.

I found more details on other forums and it seems more users noticed that some stutterings decreased substantially or got more fps in games. Someone even stated that unparking "Increased my gflops and did not increase power draw. What exactly is core parking supposed to accomplish because so far it just wastes performance."
Another member noticed that temp / core is lower etc.
Or "Just tested out BF3 and it ran quite smoother! I may kick back up the video settings! "; "i just tested saints row the third and posted in thread yesterday about how for some reason my FPS was dipping down into the 40s for no reason. Now with this unparked cores, im staying at 60 and tested same area where i saved when i was getting 40s so idk if thats really what fixed it but gonna test some more and see."

Because I didn't run my own tests I don't know if they say is for real or only placebo. I will do some tests soon...
