Wrathier,
I found this interesting page and video about issues with Samsung 960 EVO/PRO that you might find interesting. In the comments one poster mentions that the drive was not fully compliant to NVMe 1.2. Now this was 5 years ago, maybe its been improved with firmware since then. Have you checked if there is a firmware update for that drive?

The issue is not yours exactly but is about disappearing drive but maybe interesting or helpful in some way.Last edited by Jimbo93; 01-28-2022 at 06:47 AM.

Yes, bios is 8011.
Yes, they are the models, however, I have now added a pcie4.0 adata drive, and guess what, windows starts crashing literally the moment I add the new drive. Seems my mobo is faulty. How can I get an RMA to have it replaced quickly?
The 980 pro is now in the second slot, with the adata in the top slot. Doesn't seem to matter. Not default settings, I'm using rebar. Every other pci related setting is set to default.

Hi TechKnowledgeMan,
There is new bios 1003 released. Please update and check it again.
If the 980 pro is your OS drive, is windows still crashing only use 980 pro and adata drive? or crashing when 4 drives installed in?
Have you formatted the 980 pro and reinstalled OS?
For RMA, if you bought it recently, please consult the retailer first.
Thank you.

I was wrong that the board works fine with 1 drive. It just took a little longer to encounter issues. I have ordered another brand than Samsung and WD M.2 I will test in the board monday - forgot it is friday so it will not come until monday. Now I just need to pull myself together and dissemble this GB build and make the ASUS build again: DONE!
Honestly I'm not sure if anything is wrong with the Samsung 960 PRO I will need to get access to a whole other PC that is not Z690 based to test that. I can say that it has issues on both my GB board and my ASUS board.
Now TechKnowledgeMan are talking about getting a new ASUS Z690 as he thinks his is faulty. I don't think it's faulty as I have had 2 of them with the same issues. - I will also get a Samsung 980 PRO 4 gen when it comes into stock at komplett.se. I will return the SN850 as they have accepted return.
@Jimbo - My Samsung drive are updated with latest firmware through Samsung Magician.
Now I do not seem to be able to reproduce the BSOD on the Gigabyte board... It's annoying nothing seems to be consistent. It's a lot easier to work with troubleshooting if it's just a little bit consisting.
Back on the ASUS board and have updated BIOS. No Rebar, No XMP, No OC etc. I'm ONLY using the new SN850 and right now I'm installing some torrents just to install a lot of data and "put some pressure" on the system. My ADSL connection doesn't exactly push the PC.
I will of course report back if the computer crashes today or during the weekend. - And unfortunately it did. BSOD in the bottom of the post.
Can someone please tell me why my SN850 suddenly are so slow? According to the disk software it's running PCIE 4.0, but according to its speed it's hardly running?
@Starring according to BIOS it looks like newest BIOS has removed manually selection of GEN 4? - That corresponds fine with my hdd speed, but what is the reason? - I swapped the drive to M.2_4 and forced bios to run Gen 4 and I STILL get slow speeds - a little better, but not much:
And "FINALLY" the SN850 crashed as soon as I started up my first game:
Back to SATA until monday... F...Last edited by Wrathier; 01-28-2022 at 06:54 PM.

Please see folder below.
https://norgannetworks-my.sharepoint...jXgjQ?e=ETVjxv
It shows the OS running on gamix drive, the Samsung 980 pro is secondary. Any attempt to copy to or from, or interrogate the samsung drive seems to result in failure. This has caused me days, actually over a week, of hair pulling thinking my OC is bad, or windows is corrupt, or otherwise.
It seems obvious to me that the Samsung controller and these z690 boards, or at least mine, has some inherent issue. I would like to use the 2.5 tb of Samsung nvme drives I have please Asus lolLast edited by TechKnowledgeMan; 01-28-2022 at 11:59 PM.

Please report back the moment it becomes unstable. - The Samsung 980 Gen 4 I will get instead of the SN850 will take a few weeks before I have as it will not get into stuck where I bought the SN850 until mid Feb. I bought a Gigabyte AORUS M.2 Gen4 yesterday I will have on monday. Nobody in this thread have reported issues with that specific drive, so I really really really hope that will work.
My WD SN850 was very stable for some hours in OS, but decided to blue screen suddenly while launching a game. After restart I tried launching again, no BSOD, but Windows stopped "answering" the taskbar disappeared and the PC had to be restarted. That happened a few times. Then I had enough and installed on my 60gb ssd that can exactly hold Windows and I have an old 500GB mechanical for games. - I'm not happy, but the PC are rock stable with that. ASUS should soon acknowledge that they indeed do have issues with some drives.Last edited by Wrathier; 01-29-2022 at 09:32 AM.

I'm having similar problems with the asus Z690 Prime with 0811 BIOS.
I have 3 NVME drives in slots 1/3/4 and from time to time the NVME in the 4th slot randomly vanishes.
The drive that disappears is the WB SN850 running the last firmware.
I have disabled power management in the BIOS, I'm running XMP on my 5600mhz corsair ram. I have not tweaked much else really.
I have updated to the 1003 bios and see how it goes from here.
I just wanted to reassure some of you that you are not the only one having problems with NVME drives and Z690 motherboards.Last edited by Kader; 01-29-2022 at 06:30 PM.
