1403 no go with Hero/KS cpu

My Hero Z690 was on bios 1304 when I changed the 12900K out for a KS. As expected, it ran hotter at default. Would reach above 94C with one run of R23 (28080), and other benchmarks seemed similarly hotter. Supposedly 1403 features better support for the KS, so I tried it out. With default settings, it ran even hotter, hitting thermal limit 100C on four cores with R23, and again other benchmarks were hotter.

One reviewer of the KS tried both an H115i and a 720, and found little difference. I have an Optimus Sig V2 with a 360 and D5 pump (not shared), so without going exotic like bare die or LN2, I don't see how 1403 is going to work with the KS chip except for one or two threads, much less better. Changed back to 1304 for now.

I run a KS on 1403 on an extreme board
I use a 280mm nzxt Z63 AIO and never go above 75Deg C benchmarking, it even peaks at 5.7ghz! It’s amazing

Have you perhaps got a not great coverage of thermal paste ? I’m using thermal grizzly extreme paste, (the pink one) *

Also what is your Asus bios SP number on your cpu? Mine is 96
I heard that these CPU’s run hot but I haven’t seen that with mine at all, perhaps I’ve just been very lucky in the silicon lottery

I was using KPX, but just tried re-pasting with Ceramique, the stuff that comes with the V2, and tried a different application technique. Results are the same.

My KS measures 94 overall, P 102 and E 78. Cooler rating varies from 163 to 168. Q-fans set on Turbo. 1304 Bios set to default plus XMP II 6000, but removing XMP doesn't seem to matter. R23 cranks up 249 w and 94-96 C. Must be missing something.

Took extra look at mounting of the V2. I tested contact by putting small dots of lipstick on the clean IHS, saw a slight geometry problem, and corrected it. Followed advice from Optimus and pasted with KPx and finger-very-tight compression. Still results were the same. Called Intel and they got online to test the chip. They ran XTU same as I did unsuccessfully earlier; judgement: bad chip. Exchange is in process.

Aida64 Stresstest max. temp:

12700K: 58 degrees SP65
12900KS: 88 degrees SP88

HWLabs GTR 480 + 8x Noctua NF-12A

Whats with Intels XTU ? A stresstest which cant complete?

It ran with 89 C max temp, but the " Current/EDP Limit Throttle" was red the whole time. Could be XTU wasn't updated for the KS, or could be a bad chip. The rep thought it was bad but didn't say that was why. Getting the replacement today.

The replacement KS proved to need more voltage and ran 6-8 deg hotter; Hero bios 1304 rating 90 (98, 74), as opposed to 94 (102, 78). Sent it back.

Thought Sig V2 was getting full contact to the IHS, but decided to remove the .030 washers under the posts from the Optimus kit and experiment with thinner ones. Ended up with .009, .014, .018, and .014 with about a 2 degree improvement.

Think that's about it without more radiator.

My 12900ks runs in a max extreme board now - I was sick to death of problems and issues with the hero board
The cpu is an sp 92 and runs no hotter than 85ded C ever tbh and I’m only using a z63 nzxt AIO
*I thought they were supposed to run hot but mine doesn’t really.
Silicon lottery I guess
My only issue now is getting the memory to run at an XMP profile - it just won’t won’t stable
I’m at the stage where I’ve now ordered a second set of different memory from Corsair to see it there is an improvement
If there isn’t I will never agian buy an Asus board tbh
I honestly think the whole 12th gen platform sucks really - it’s rushed and still in beta to my mind, especially the bios that are available *
I haven’t enjoyed 12th gone anything like as much as 9th, 9th just worked out of the gate - 12 th gen has been nothing but expense aggro and frustration for me really*
