Trying to set up port triggering, do I need to port forward first?

Hi there, I've recently bought an ac2900 router and I'm trying to set up my ports for my game server,

I've tried port triggering on its own and I get nowhere, however when I do port forwarding it works fine, do I need to do a port forward then enter the info into the port triggering for triggering to work? Or are they 2 completely separate things, I can't seem to find any concrete info on the web about it

If they are 2 separate things how come it's only working with forwarding and not triggering? What am I doing wrong?

Just concentrate on the Virtual Server / Port Forwarding. It different from port triggering. Port forwarding allow multi user access a particular port forward to that server port open for user.

Thank you will do, only reason I ask is security concerns, apparently triggering is safer, Ive just managed to get it to work

While your here, do I need to open.uo the internal ports as well or just the external ones or vice versa?

For port forwarding you need to set both external and internal.
