I'm running a TUF 4090 OC with the CableMod 12VHPWR to 4 x PCIE (Corsair Type 4) cable without issue (both benchmarking & gaming at 4K). All you really need to do is follow a couple of simple steps:
- Ensure the connector is fully plugged in,
- No lateral bends near to the connector, and
- Don't bend the wires too close to the connector (CableMod suggests a minimum of 35mm past where the wires leave the connector before initiating a bend).
The first one is a really important one; it has been noted on Reddit mega thread that at least one burnt connector/adapter where the connector was pictured before it was unplugged showing that it wasn't fully seated. Most others show the aftermath of the adapter and/or the card's socket so correct seating cannot be determined.

I did see some stuff about Cablemod and luckily they also have a European store since i'm from The Netherlands. This might be a good solution instead of the provided default Nvidia Cable Adapter once i'm getting a RTX4080 16GB TUF or ROG.
Here there seems to be a huge topic about some cables plugging in fine, and some cables somehow don't click properly, no matter how much they try to make it "click" , mixed opinions about various adapter brands and differences between FE card connectors vs non-FE card connectors.
So we know it's important that the 12vhpwr plug needs to be fully-seated, but that could still be problematic because of adapter manufacturing tolerances, 1 adapter might work fine, the other might not be able to plug in fully, no matter how hard you try.

So glad the strix was sold out on launch day. $400 extra for no good reason whatsoever except looks. It's looks are odd though. Snap on some wheels and put it on a track. Instant NASCAR. Yeehaw. lolz. Pick a lane.

Igors conclusions are flawed, gamers nexus have released a video where they rely entirely on scientific data and observations. They are the only channel i have seen conclusively able to recreate the melting cable:

long story short- the problems are caused by cables that haven't been inserted fully
